Why buy new?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I know why people buy used gear - $$$. I'm just wondering why people spend big bucks to buy new. I'm buying new soon and my reasons are as follows: 1) With Square One's demo program was able to demo lots of different gear for free after putting down a deposit and agreeing to buy new g ear - saved a ton of money on rental fees.
2) I wanted a container made for me for maximum comfort, 3) I wanted to design my own container/canopy . Get exactly what I wanted. 4) I looked for used gear, but being a smallish female couldn't find exactly what I wanted used.
So just curious why others are buying new.

i bought all new as i was on the same type of demo program as you are.
if i could do it again id only buy a new container.
a container thats made exactly for you definetaly is worth the money.
as far as mains i ended up selling my new one (which didnt match) after putting a couple hundred jumps on it and buying used.

If its your first rig, buy used and get the harness resized by the manufacture (usually only a couple hundred bucks).

Why?

You'll out grow the canopy sizes (most likely) fairly quickly, so you'll want to downsize (or maybe upsize, you never know). If you have used gear and it won't fit, you're not out much money.

You won't stand up all your landings when you being (hell I still fall over on some of them), it won't hurt as bad if its not shiney new gear.

With that said, new gear rocks, you get it to fit you, your colors and FF safe (most likely...a lot of used rigs aren't really FF safe, they were built before they needed to be). You also spend a LOT more money.

I got brand all brand new gear because I had the good fortune of having some sphincterous break into my apartment and steal (among other things) my first rig (used)

I had planned on buying used. I shopped around and even finally found a good rig for me for about $2,300. Then the weekend before I was going to mail the check, I went to a Boogie and won a Drawing 50% off a complete new custom Aerodyne Rig (container, main and reserve). Really made my decision very easy. Brand new custom rig for less than the used one was going to cost. It just came in yesterday!! Woo Hoo!!

While a possibility, I dont like that option. Remember Dave, us big folks and the little ones have a hard time finding rigs that are evenly remotly close to good-fitting. I personally would not want to buy an ill-fitting rig and getting resized in the hopes that it fits well.

As far as planing for downsizing, you'll be able to put a canopy one size smaller (or bigger) into most any rig designed for a particular size, and quite possibly 2 sizes smaller.

Geez!
When I worked at Rigging Innovations, half my work involved resizing harnesses for second owners.
Far better sendig a harness to the factory for re-size because they have all the patterns, secret sizing charts, TSOed webbing and secret factory fairy dust.

Which reminds me ... I have to call Sun Path about re-sizing a Javelin harness for a second owner who is 3 inches taller and a good 50 pounds heavier.

Why buy new? hmm mostly because I had the money and it felt really good to have all new gear.
Also it really hurt to have some asshole break into my apartment and steal the nice fitting used gear that I had owned. Kind of therapy for loosing my first rig.

Not a bad idea Dave.

I wanted to point out in case you're not familliar with how the demo program works at the DZ store at Perris (and some other DZ's) that it's not uncommon for someone involved in it to do over 100 jumps on demo gear before selecting and recieving their gear, at what ends up being no cost to them.

In this amount of time the participants are free to downsize (provided it's safe to do so) and try out many different manufacturers, and models of gear. Also it's been found that not that many people out grow the first canopy they select from being in the demo program within the first year or two.

Oh yeah. You are allowed to fall down in the demo gear. You just have to use the "brush of shame" afterward.......:P

I bought all new gear cause at the time i had a man that was rich and bought it for me. That was 5 years ago. I've since dumped him and now i seek out deals on used gear since i'm poor and can't afford brand new stuff.

for the latest used rig I bought the guy had it resized for nothing (he had friends at JumpShack) - I am not a rigger but my impression is that for a rig without hip rings it is a no-brainer. I bought a new rig when I had 20 jumps - but am pretty sure I will not be able to afford that again.
