scubafreak 0 #1 September 10, 2010 Hi, As you can see in my profile, with 33 jumps I am a newbie. There is so much information out here that I am getting confused what parachute to buy. Also at my club in Belgium there is already a discussion about me and me to buy a new or second hand parachute. Advise is welcome! FrankJust beginning, will use dz.com mostly to get info about what parachute to buy and read stories about this beautiful sport.
shropshire 0 #2 September 10, 2010 Hi Frank, welcome to the sport and forums. A lot of folks like to buy gear as soon as they start, but for many, it's often smarter to hire kit from the DZ during the early stages. May be concetrate on other gear first ... Alti, helmet, goggles, suit etc.. and then look at the expensive stuff when you have more experience and have chatted to more people. BUT - it depends upon how deep your pockets are. wolfriverjoe 1,523 #4 September 10, 2010 A big oneThis has been asked a lot. If you get frustrated with the search function (I do sometimes) then look through the thread titles in Gear & Rigging or General. There's a whole lot of "Buying First Rig" titled threads in there. A used canopy will be a lot easier to pack. Any used gear will have had the worst of the depreciation taken care of and will give you the best resale value. The discussion at your club will be the best place to get advice. People who know you and your abilities and the local gear market. If you decide to buy through the classifieds (or any long distance purchase), get help from someone you know and trust. There are good deals out there, but also a lot of gear that would be inappropriate for you (plus the scams). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
