Getting spanked on a reline...

Recommended Posts

I just had my hornet 135 relined and now every jump (put 6 or 8 on it this weekened) makes me think i'm gonna tear my canopy up it's so hard.

Here's what i've done:
  • Packed the same way as before the reline
  • Rolled the nose tight
  • Got someone else to pack it
  • Replaced all the rubber bands

Everything I did, made no change to the opening characteristics.

I can tell you that my rigger followed PISA/Aerodyne's instructions to a T re-measuring numerous times to make sure everything was done correctly. I can also tell you that there were some additional marks on the brake lines that didn't make sense to him, he called aerodyne - they didn't have an answer, tried to get in touch with the people in SA and finally got some type of answer that didn't make much sense but my rigger did what they said. Everything measures the way it is supposed to according to aerodyne.

I can't seem to find anyone at my DZ who has actually had a canopy relined, evidentally they all sell their shit and get new. Is this a typical scenerio for a reline? I heard some mfg. make their lines so that they "stretch" into trim, and others make them so that they are in trim when you put it on the canopy. Is there any truth to this?

On both of my Stiletto's I have them relined when I start to get spanked. There have been instances where the lineset was trimmed incorrectly at the factory but you said your rigger measured everything, I would suspect the brakeline setting from the loop up to the cascade, maybe too long? You said Aerodyne wasn't much help in the U.S., do they not do canopy repairs over here? You might try to call Aerodyne yourself and rattle their cage a little, you know get some "customer service" out of them. Good luck

the only possibility i can think of is send your canopy to aerodynes factory and see if there wasn't a mistake made by your rigger, or by the people he called who told him the wrong thing.
if something was wrong with the reline, they may replace it for free if their people told your rigger the wrong thing.

    Just an idea here....

A skydiver where I jump had a canopy re-lined (not sure of the type of canopy)....when it came back to him it behaved VERY badly. He had a rigger measure the lines and found out that his 135 canopy had 120 lines on it!

He sent it back and got a new re-line for free.

FWIW Aerodyne has some of the best "customer service in the industry right now. And they are trying to be helpful with an orphaned product that isn't even one of theirs.

Not stretch, shrink. (microline shirnks from heat of friction from the slider grommets). You have microline, which will shrink after use. I believe it was atair and related co's that used this on their cobalts, vipers, alphas.

I can't find direct 'admittance' of this (didn't search too hard), but cobaltdan mentions this idea here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=370834;search_string=trim%20shrink%20atair;#370834

    From atair's website:

Yes, spectra lines change dimensions slightly, but they are easy to inspect, wear, and have no tendency for breaking. As with any raw material, an engineer must design their product around the specific characteristics of that material. The Atair Cobalt is not overly sensitive to trim. When a Cobalt canopy is built it is actually not in perfect trim. After 40-100 jumps the spectra is broken in changing dimensions to put the canopy into a more perfect trim. Other canopies may go out of trim, ours go into it! A new cobalt flies great, and as you break it in you will only become happier with it.
