cmchristian 0 #1 May 31, 2004 Hey all, I am getting ready to buy a new rig once I return from Iraq and am looking for recommendations. Right now I am tossing around the idea of a Javelin Odyssey or a Micron and a Crossfire 2, Undecided on reserve. Any one out there have any recommendations on Reserves or Containers they really like. I am pretty set of the Crossfire 2 119 after flying one, but any PROs and CONs are welcome. My primary discipline is RW but also I enjoy freeflying ever once in a while. Thanks for any help you guys can provide. Raistlin 0 #2 May 31, 2004 Just my .02 worth on reserves.. you can pick PD because it's fabulous for its reliability (and expensive), or go for smaller pack volume with a reserve like Quick - I don't really think they are much less reliable than the PDs... RyanofOZ 0 #3 May 31, 2004 I did a lot of research on reserves a little bit ago and chose the Smart by Aerodyne. Not as procy as a PD but just as good IMO.Oz
Raistlin 0 #4 May 31, 2004 Cool - can you give me (us) the reasoning behind your decision? I chose Raven back then, because I had a good deal and was short on $, but am looking to replace it with something in the near future... Basically what do you want out of a reserve? I'll go by 1) how safe, 2) how much pack volume, 3) price... you?

Yeah I agree, dont buy a reserve "for its reliability". Buy one with the smallest pack volume. Its not like your life depends on it or anything. At least if it doesnt work you can always be happy that it was nice and small. Q. Why do birds sing? A. Because they dont have to pack when they land
Raistlin 0 #6 June 1, 2004 Enlighten me as to when was the last time a reserve from a fairly well-known manufacturer blew up after being deployed because it wasn't strong enough, O mighty sardonic one?
RyanofOZ 0 #7 June 1, 2004 I chose Aerodyne because of the new design, price, customer service, and great track record with performance. I have yet to hear of a built in turn (like my raven) crummy flair etc.. from a Smart. PD was my other choice and I feel they have a great product too, but I could afford a new Smart or a used PD. I went new and think I made a good choice.Oz
riggerrob 643 #8 June 1, 2004 If you buy your reserve from the top half-dozen manufacturers, you will be fine. The trick is to buy a reserve that was designed in the 1990s or this century. Most of the problems with reserves designed in the 1980s (i.e. Raven) is that no one was loading mains much more than one pound per square foot, so no one knew how to design a canopy that flared well at heavier wing loadings. Even the folks at the Precision Aerodynamics admit that Ravens flare miserably when you load them more than 1.4. All the reserves designed since 1993 look similar at arms length: span wise reinforcing tapes, etc. and will survive the harder openings specified in TSO C23C. I currently own an FFE Amigo 172, but would cheerfully buy a PD, R-Max, Techno, etc. ... but I can probably get the best price on a Smart.
