Bonehead's Rat Hat

Recommended Posts

Anyone seen it, worn it, jumped it? I am looking for an open face helmet that has good chin/jaw protection, and just ran across this today.

All comments welcome! ;)

I saw someone wearing one in Perris last weekend. Looked pretty slick IMO, but I wonder how good the chin protection can really be with the way it opens up (i.e. buckle on chin). I'd bet its more than fine for minor impacts to that area though.

Three months ago while I was over at bonehead I put one of the first ones chris made on. Very comfy like the gunner and very light weight of course. The jaws or chin guard opens up to slide over your head then close up. They are cool and not just for tunnel rats.

I saw a guy wearing one at perris. It's flexible like the Gunner and articulates to a degree where the two halves meet, so I can't see the chin protection being up to anything but nocks and scrapes.... so I guess on a par with the protection afforded by any skydiving helmet.

That might have been my buddy Ginger Rich. He bought the third one off the line and has jumped it at Netheravon and Perris.

It is pretty solid across the front - takes a bit of muscle to pull the 'jaws' apart and get it on but he has a small head and I have a melon so I can't tell you what it feels like.

Made him look a bit like a chipmunk though... definitely not just a tunnel helmet. He liked it.

anyone have any pictures of this helmet on somebody's head?

Yep, here's my ugly mug in my brand spankin' new Rat-Hat. It seems perfect for adding some chin protection on AFF jumps without covering the mouth, and I expect I'll also be wearing it on tandems and fun jumps.
