Question for riggers

Recommended Posts

I saw this post on incidents and was hoping some riggers could add their $0.02 please.
thank you

I wonder if it might be the color (red) that seems to fade quickly on all kinds of things. I wonder if it might have weakened the fabric in the red areas fading faster than the other colors. It might be totally irrelevant but something I would be curious about if any riggers know if colors matter.

Don't know if that was the cause here, but test have shown that certain colors of nylon, typically the lighter ones, do degrade faster.

Red dye is one of the least "fast" dyes.
For example, the dye on red thread often "bleeds" when it gets wet. This has minimal affect on thread strength.

Fortunately, dye fading is separate from UV fading.
For example, neon dyes fade the fastest, however the fabric usually has many hundreds of jumps left on it after the neon dye has faded.

Fading from Ultra Violet light (aka. sunlight) is a totally separate phenomenon that rapidly degrades fabric strength. By the time you can see significant fading, the fabric is down to half strength.

I haven't noticed red fadining anywhere near as much as say neon orange, but I have noticed that red f11 does bleed dye into the lines. The only thing colour can really do is effect pack volume (and I only really notice that on Tandem reserves when I pack more than 1 all the same size just different colours back to back)
I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
