Nightingale 0 #1 May 24, 2004 I've got a pilot chute that's about 24" in diameter. I am attempting to attach a teddy bear to it, so the bear can have its own parachute and the owner can take it for a skydive and "deploy" the bear at about 200 feet. I need to know how much the bear needs to weigh to fully inflate the pilot chute, because short of repeatedly pitching the bear off the roof, I'm not sure how to figure it out. I'll resort to the roof method if necessary, but I was wondering if there is any kind of formula that can be used instead.
ph8068 0 #2 May 24, 2004 If you raised your standard pilot chute up to head height and dropped it, the weight of the bridle is sufficient to get it inflated on its descent to the ground. So, I'm guessing the weight of even a small teddy would be sufficient. Of course, why does your teddy need a parachute - surely its soft and furry enough to withstand the impact from 200ft
Nightingale 0 #3 May 24, 2004 hehe... Paige's teddy bear needs a parachute because the teddy wants to be cool!
masterrig 1 #4 May 24, 2004 Doesn't take much weight at all to open a pilot-chute. I've taken new pilot-chutes right out of the package, no bridle, just the pilot-chute, dropped them to the floor from shoulder height and they opened. I don't think, you'll have any trouble. I take it, this is the Teddy's first jump? Case o' beer! Chuck
Nightingale 0 #5 May 24, 2004 hehe. I think Paige will owe the beer. Its her teddy. However, I will make sure photos are taken of the "test flights"
councilman24 37 #6 May 24, 2004 And it's cool to jump a round? Athough I did buy another round this year to jump. I think you need to put a small ram air kite on this teddy.I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
freakflyer9999 1 #7 May 24, 2004 Someone dropped a teddy bear at the WFFC in 97, but when the teddy bear had a total malfunction, people on the ground swore they had seen a skydiver bounce in the cornfields. The ensuing search effort cost a significant amount of $ and partially stopped jumping as well while search aircraft combed the area. The teddy bear owner even confessed to manifest, but the search continued just in case. So be careful even when you're packing for a Teddy Bear. Nightingale 0 #8 May 24, 2004 hehe. I'd love to put a ram air kite on Teddy, but used pilot chutes are cheaper.
BlindBrick 0 #9 May 24, 2004 Quotehehe. I'd love to put a ram air kite on Teddy, but used pilot chutes are cheaper. We've done those. You put a 12 inch tall Action Man under a ram-air kite and he can fly real good. We switched to ram-air after his round resulted in a total mal that terminated at the feet of the airport manager. I think he was amused, but the dzo defiantely wasn't. -Blind"If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." councilman24 37 #10 May 24, 2004 Yeah, I spent hours in those fields with the search parties even though I saw the bear land about 200' from me. People from the other side of the airport swore that it wasn't the bear that they saw, but it was. Here's the $20 toy version of a ram air kite. Just right! http://scientificsonline.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_3081736I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
Snowflake 0 #11 May 24, 2004 QuoteHere's the $20 toy version of a ram air kite. Just right! Hmmmm take one of my spare servos and stuff it in teddy. make attachment points for the steering lines and you got a swoopable teddy. Of course I'm much to lazy to actually do this but it's a thought
