JustChuteMeNow 0 #3 October 26, 2008 Welcome to the sport and I'm glad you are having a good time. What DZ are you jumping at for your training?Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that. girthrockwel 0 #5 October 26, 2008 I'm training at Skydive Alabama. I did my ground school and AFF level 1 last week. Everyone there seems really cool. I've been pricing used gear to get an idea of what kind of money I'll be spending when I get my licence. I'm wondering what size container and main i'll need, I'm 6'2 about 235lbs. Also what brand/model main would be good to start with? I'm working on a budget as well. My wife has had it with my hobbies. I also race motorcycles with WERA and collect guns. I'm scared that she'll expect something to go to fund skydiving. It might be her.

I recently brought my first rig for $1000 with a cypres. it was a 93 model rig with 120 jumps on it. i loved it, sure its not the latest gear but its safe and flies awesome and has alot of jumps left on it. It sure saves wasting money hiring gear. Your a big guy so will probably need something around the 260 for your first canopy.
girthrockwel 0 #7 October 27, 2008 How many jumps is too many? At what point is a canopy getting towards the end of it's life?
skymama 37 #8 October 28, 2008 It really depends on how well the canopy was taken care of, what conditions it was jumped in, if the lines were redone, etc. If you have a specific canopy or rig you are looking at, the Gear forum is the best place to post your questions. A lot of Riggers read that forum and they'll be able to help you out a lot more than I can with that kind of question. With whatever used gear you buy, you should have a Rigger at your dz inspect it for you before you jump it.She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
