I had an epiphany!

Recommended Posts

As I posted before, my first tandem was last Sunday. Fear seemed to be the overriding emotion. Swore I'd never do it again. You couldn't give me a big enough bag of money to get me up there again.

I've been obsessing with the exit portion - watching videos, and constantly going over the whole scary part over and over again. "There's no lip, nothing to hang on to, it's 2 1/2 miles straight down, what keeps you from falling out of the plane..........."

Duh. That's what you're SUPPOSED to do!

The light clicked on, and I felt nearly ALL of the "door fear" drain away. If I fell out, what would happen? The chute would open, and I would drift to the ground - just like the LAST time!

Then I found myself figuring out how to beat the nausea, and realized I wouldn't be thinking this if I didn't plan on jumping again.....

What have I done? :o

:D

You're a skydiver, no doubt.

Consider doing a static line or aff jump next. You're likely to feel less nausea if you're in more control.

When I did AFF 1, they said that they were unsure of my count before the exit because I hesitated and then kinda just went with no real indication that I was about to exit. I told the instructors that I got scared and felt like I was going to fall out of the plane. His response put things into perspective for me...."Wouldn't the best time to fall out of a plane be when you have a parachute strapped to your back?"

I really didn't have much of a response to that!

You, sir, are addicted to skydiving. I'm afraid there is nothing you can do at this point except...KEEP JUMPING!!

It took me a few jumps to get over the door fear. It still gets me a bit when I am out on the step, but the people who have been in this sport much longer than we have will tell your that a little bit of fear is what will keep you sharp and safe. "Complacency kills" is a fairly common phrase around here.

Nausea under canopy during a tandem has been reported a few times so you're not the only one. I think part of it is you don't know what to expect. Once I started AFF and was in control of the canopy I didn't have the problem with nausea any more.

Welcome to the sport!
There's a risk to skydiving that is not always mentioned; the risk of becoming addicted to it.

Yeah, see?

You first said that you didn't feel ANYTHING. Now it appears that it's all that you think about.

Fucking A, man, do some shit. DO IT. You get ONE life. Quit feeling guilty that you've found something that makes you feel good. Hell, my WIFE can't make me feel this good. And SHE'S PISSED.

Sure it's risky, sure, you COULD DIE. But you could do that sitting in a cube, working for the MAN (and the MAN is a prick, I know.... I've seen 'em carry the heart-attack victims off from work. Not pretty. Cube jockeys dying at WORK. Not how I choose to go.)

Man, you are just BEGINNING to understand freedom. Freedom from bullshit, freedom from the wife, freedom from the kids, freedom from the everyday, freedom from the ordinary, freedom THAT MADE THIS COUNTRY GREAT!!!!!!! TRUE FREEDOM!

A great man once said to me:

"Live FREE or DIE!"

That's the word, my man.

"We're never gonna survive, unless we get a little CRAZY".

Fuck fear, that's what kills you. Fear of not paying the bills, fear of losing the job, fear of the recession, fear of the housing crisis, all of that CNN-made hysteria, and other assorted man-made dilemna. FUCK ALL OF IT.

Living does not kill you. Living means that you HAVE lived. Living means that you WILL live. Living means that you look death in the face, and you tell him, right in his face,

"FUCK YOU."

Living means that you have lived, not that you won't live. And the very fact that you've been GIVEN life DEMANDS it.

So do it.

LIVE.
"Get these balls!"

Funny! I'm wondering what I have done too. I did my first tandem Aug 2. I loved it so much I jumped again the next day. At that point I couldn't imagine Never jumping again.

My friend invited me to MOAB & I did my 3rd jump (tandem) there. It was Incredible!!

I think about jumping A LOT..wondering if I'm Crazy..lol..& Considering jumping AFF & going for my Class A next Spring..

I think I may be hooked...
