BETO74 0 #1 May 20, 2004 Can anybody explain how leaving the nose expose or if you believe rolling it creates slow openings on high performance conopies? Difference between accuracy canopies vs high performance canopies opening wise, try to create a slower opening.? Two diffrent questions motivated by a subtopic about the Safire openings. Don't want to open the can of worms between psyco packing or propacking just do you roll the nose or not to get slow openings. wmw999 2,579 #2 May 20, 2004 Empirically speaking (i.e. I done it), when I failed to roll the nose on my flat-packed F111 Firefly it slammed me so badly I still get stiff in the mornings. 17 years later. 2 rolls and it was a nice firm opening. I like a fairly quick opening, so I don't experiment with nose-rolling now on my Diablo. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
skymedic 0 #3 May 20, 2004 I have the info...I'll find it. it's from PD. and they make a fairly strong argument in favor of NOT rolling the nose. although if my girlfriend doesn't roll the nose on her sabre it will rock her world. johnny1488 1 #4 May 20, 2004 From what I have found rolling the nose only allows the slider a fraction of a second to get square and catch air. On some canopies, if the nose isnt rolled or hidden from the relative wind in some way, the canopy would inflate before the slider has a chance to do its job. riggerrob 643 #5 May 20, 2004 The dividing line seems to be 1993. Most canopies (all F-111, Sabre Mark 1, etc.)designed before 1993 need their noses rolled for comfortable openings at terminal. Canopies designed after 1993 (Stiletto, Triathlon, Diablo, Safire, Solo, etc.) open fine - at terminal - with their noses open and painfully slow - at low airspeeds - if you roll the nose. johnny1488 1 #6 May 20, 2004 I have always believed that the #1 factor of a canopies opening characteristics is the design of the airfoil. Packing I believe is secondary. What I mean my this is if you sort the fabric and lines, clear the stabilizers and keep the slider against the stops, the canopy will open how its gonna open. Kimblair13 0 #7 May 20, 2004 hey, on both my sabreII 150 and sabreII 135 i didn't roll the nose but more than twice. now i have an impulse 120 and for terminal openings i need to roll it like 10 times to get it to open slow enough for when i have camera, and maybe 5 for not. sub terminal i roll it twice. this is just me though and i've been told more than twice i'm weird. just try everything and see what works for you i guess. mjosparky 4 #8 May 20, 2004 A big factor in rolling the nose is the depth of the cells, the distance from the top skin to the bottom skin. The greater that distance the more the opening will benefit from rolling the nose. SparkyMy idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I know with my Sabre1, they said not to tuck the nose into teh middle cell like I did with their F111 canopies. I don't remember them saying not to roll the nose at all. I've always rolled the nose of the Sabre, as does the packer I usually use, and my openings are usually soft. There are battered women? I've been eating 'em plain all of these years... BETO74 0 #10 May 20, 2004 I would like to talk about the Safire openings in my experience. I had a 190 Sabre that I used to roll the nose to get soft openings then I got my old Safire 1 and used to slam me everytime until I started exposing the nose and psyco packing, now I use the same method with my crossfire and I haven't had a bad opening. Somebody said something about PD's research or was it Icarus???? Thanks Carloshttp://web.mac.com/ac057a/iWeb/AC057A/H0M3.html
