placount99 0 #1 June 12, 2008 so I did my first dive last weekend and LOVED every minute of it. But I had a couple questions that I thought you guys could answer. During the jump I had the sensation that I couldn't breathe. The instructor told me this was normal, but why does this happen? Do you get used to it? Can you do anything to help that? Also I felt a bit nauseous as well. I don't know why either. I don't get motion sickness and don't have and irritable stomach. Any insight on this? THANKS FOR ANY HELP! JustChuteMeNow 0 #2 June 13, 2008 Welcome to the sport and I'm gald you loved every minute of it. I do as well. In answer to your questions, some people do hyperventilate from time to time due to the excitement of the situation. However, there is plenty of oxygen to breathe and this shouldn't be a problem. As far as the nauseous feeling it could be caused from heat, dehydration, or possibly the turns under canopy. It is hard to say without more information. However, it may or may not be due to the skydive. Again welcome to the sport and have fun!Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that. vskydiver 0 #3 June 13, 2008 Have you ever seen videos of people teaching tiny babies how to swim? They blow in their faces and the baby will hold it's breath as a natural reflex, then they put the baby underwater. When you get a lot of air blown in your face some people will reflexively hold their breath and feel like they can't breath. You just have to be aware of this and force yourself to take a breath. You can breath! There is plenty of air there. This happens to several first time jumpers but once they figure it out, it's usually not a problem anymore. The nausea was probably just nerves. That first jump is very overwhelming! You'll probably do a lot better the second time. Have fun and welcome to the sport!
Peej 0 #4 June 13, 2008 Exactly what VSskydiver said! And welcome to the sport! I bried all of the passengers who i'll be filming on a tandem that if i fly up and tap my finger on my lips, they are not breathing and should do so. Otherwise we tell them to scream on exit, that generally expels the air from the lungs and gets them to breathe Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky
dnhump 1 #5 June 13, 2008 Your 'self' just experienced "sure death". Your body felt the 'fall', your brain saw the ground coming and you wonder why you couldn't breathe? You felt sick to your stomach because your brain thought you were going to die and threw out a few chemicals!! Ever heard of 'fight or flight'? Welcome to SKYDIVING! This ain't jogging in the park! It's FLIGHT! Enjoy the physical reaction! It's what skydivers live for! THIS IS LIFE!

AdrianG 0 #7 June 13, 2008 This happened to me also. I went with my buddy and it also happened to him. Everybody seems to be right because my buddy said it happened to him for a little bit but it stopped. Me on the other hand it was for the whole freefall. Before I go next time I am just going to hop on my gixxer take it up to 150 and open my visor Hope it doesn't happen to me next time. Congrats! placount99 0 #8 June 13, 2008 Also how expensive is this hobby after certification?
skymama 37 #9 June 14, 2008 You'll need a few thousand dollars for a rig. Add to that a helmet, altimeter and jumpsuit (check the Classifieds on here for prices). You'll also have to pay extra for coached jumps to get to your A license at 25 jumps. How much depends on who you find to jump with you at your dz, there is no set rate. Sometimes, someone will jump for free, others may ask you to pay their slot. The average jump ticket is around $25 now, it seems. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
vskydiver 0 #10 June 14, 2008 Quote Also how expensive is this hobby after certification? That really depends on the DZ you are jumping at. My nephew did his first tandem last month at our DZ and went back to--- (*another state) where he's doing a summer internship. He is taking the IAD classes at a DZ near him now and he's paying almost double what he'd have paid at our DZ for each jump. Plus they are charging him $89 to sign up for the USPA! I told him to go online and sign up for that and it's only $51. Coaching at our DZ is an extra $20 unless you go out on Thursdays and then it's free. I'm sure other DZ's will have their prices as well for all that. Check around prices will vary.
