Waiting in anticipation in Illinois!

Recommended Posts

This skydiving forum has been a big help to me in the past week or so. I am going to make my first tandem jump in June. Why so far off? Well, I was hoping to get a group together to go, and we all had to pick a date. I started with about eight people, and now it is down to just two of us. Amazing how people chicken out when it comes time to commit to actually doing it. I am so stoked. Thanks to all of you that post important information on this site! I have a feeling that this may become another expensive habit for me. I don't know why I want to do it so badly; I just do. It has preoccupied my thoughts like crazy. I live near an airport where they have glider rides, and everytime I hear an airplane take up a glider I think of skydiving. My eyes are to the sky!

Welcome to DZ.com :)
Start saving now for your AFF because it's an expensive hobby, if you enjoy your tandem you will absolutely LOVE your training, it only gets better.

I'll be jumping at Chicagoland Skydiving Center. Any tips on how to save $$ would be welcomed! I have been looking into the costs of the courses etc. . . Esp. since I would eventually have to get my own gear. If I do like it, which I really don't doubt because my desire greatly outweighs my fears, I could easily do it over the summer. . . maybe save up and do it the following year, with jumps in the meantime.

Just try and get through your AFF before you run out of money IMO, think of gear later. I'm onto solo jumps + gear hire now and although they're still not cheap, I can at least get 1 jump in per week... it's enough to satisfy my cravings while I save up for my own equipment.

AFF stages are just soo expensive, it's a pain having to wait multiple weeks between jumps.

I'm sure you'll have a fabulous time! I jumped at Chicagoland on Friday and there are some great people there. Was the first time I had visited, but everyone was very friendly and welcoming. When will you be jumping? I'll be there a couple times a month for the rest of the summer.

I am planning on jumping the 15th. I am sure that I will be checking the weather like a junkie as the date comes around, and I will probably become a dropzone regular by then. My sister jumped there as a one time thing. . . I have heard good things all around. I only wish that it were sooner! At least if I do enjoy it, I will have the next few months.

Thanks. . . That is the impression that I am getting. I am just looking forward to the experience. I am trying not to have too many expectations and just go with it. But I am also learning a lot about skydiving just from doing a little research, and visiting this forum. I just can't get enough info. I do that. . . if I am interested in something, I go all out. I guess in a way, I just can't stop learning. Looks like there is a lot to learn here!

I did my work toward my A license over a nine month period, two to three jumps a month (I am in Washington and we had six weeks off due to weather). That spread the cost over a longer period. In between jumps I would read my SIM, look for owner's manuals on canopies and containers. Each time I went to the DZ I was prepared and knew what I was doing. I was fortunate to pass each AFF course without repeating any, in part, because I was prepared. You don't HAVE to do this in two weekends.

I wonder if I could do some "class work" in the off months. . . I am not sure how that works. I am going to go back to the dropzone soon to check out more details on that.
Thanks
