New guy on the block

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone I am now officially a skydive student, not just a wannabe on the ground. After years of contemplating, toying with the idea and financial planning that never seemed to work I finally did it...I made my first AFF jump on 10-16-2005. I screwed the exit, screwed the arch at times but in the end I pulled the chute and landed in once piece, I guess that is the ultimate goal. I made my second jump today, still need to work on the exit and arching but it felt so much better than my first jump. I am jumping at Skyidive Suffolk in Virginia, they are some really cool people, my instructors have been awesome and I am quickly making new friends.
I may have to tighten up my budget big time but it is well worth it. Cant wait till my next payday so I can jump again.

hi kevin,

i think you are like most of us newbies, harder on ourselves than others can be. I'm new too. Just botched my level 4 today. But thankfully i'm here to read the forums! :-) s'all good! Just keep going through things in your head, if you can get some books, read them.

You'll do fine, just keep listening to your instructors and thinking about it.

Things can and will go wrong up there, that's why we have to really focus on what the instructors are telling us.

Thumbs up and just keep at it!

I think so. After I got home on my second or third weekend of jumping, the other half asked, "So, how's
the skydiving going?" I just sort of looked myself up and down, stretched my arms, wiggled my fingers,
and said, "Apparently, pretty good!" :)

Have you told any of your co-workers that you're jumping? A couple of weekends ago, I was waiting to
get on a load and talked to a lady who was getting ready to do a tandem. She volunteered that her
brother (a firefighter) and some of his co-workers were supposed to come out and do tandems with
her, but as Saturday approached, they all called to cancel, so she came by herself. Right after she
jumped she called him and gave him a hard time about it.

Welcome!

Yeah I did tell all my friends at the fire station that I went skydiving. They all think I am crazy, as if running into a burning building isnt? Some have said they would like to go, others said that they are too scared. So now I give them a hard time. Macho firefighters...haa! I got one on them.
Thank you to everyone for welcoming me to the group.

I could just imagine this interview..."so let me get this straight. You want me to get in a plane with a parachute attacked to my back. Wearing fwildlandfirefighter gear. With how many pounds of equipment? And then you want me to jump over a fire, and fly a very flamable material to a suitable landing area amongst a shitlot of trees, and somehow manage to put out a fire. I'll start in two weeks"
