Daizey 0 #1 April 30, 2004 I came across a rig that the owner mentioned that has a reserve that was relined by the manufacturer two years ago. The reserve has a couple of rides on it. Besides damage done to the lines on a reserve ride, what could be other reasons for having a reserve sent back to the manufacturer for realignment? *daizey*
piisfish 140 #2 April 30, 2004 just a supposition, I am not a rigger, and my low experience never gave me the occasion to read/see such a case but maybe : -the lines have been damaged during landing (trees etc) -some lines broke on opening -age of lines (is it possible that the quality goes down with age?) no doubt some more experimented peole will correct my suppositions.scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
Hazarrd 1 #3 April 30, 2004 whoohoo! daizey is getting a rig You might be able to call the manufacturer and ask them. They may even have the reason recorded somewhere for why the canopy was relined. .-.
skybeergodd 0 #4 April 30, 2004 A PD reserve has a " life tag on it" basically 25 jumps or 40 re-packs it has to go in for a manufacturer inspection before it gets deemed as airworthy again....so maybe PD found something they didn't like on the inspection....or If the manufacturer used Kevlar....then Kevlar has a limited life before it begins to de-grade...(Believe me as a fierefighter who wears kevlar gear into structure fires)...most canopy manufractureres who use kevlar know this but won't publish this fact.....but National Fire Protection Agency says Kevlar is only good for 5 years and then it's prone to failure.....and at least ! reserve manufacturer uses kevlar and is aware of this fact and WILL NOT recall it's reserves after 5 years for a mandatory re-line.......anyone who wants to know this manufactureres name can PM me and I'll give it to you. VectorBoy 0 #5 April 30, 2004 A complete reline or an extra stitch on some line attachments?
Daizey 0 #6 April 30, 2004 Hazard....maybe I sure hope so! vectorboy...It was a complete reline... *daizey*
KevinMcGuire 0 #7 April 30, 2004 Could be that the canopy once had dacron lines and spectra was wanted by the new owener. I've seen that done before

Do you wear kevlar or nomex turn outs? Have never heard of kevlar except in ballistic vests. skybeergodd 0 #9 April 30, 2004 Our turnout gear is 100% kevlar and according to NFPA 1500....all kevalar material is subject to fail after 5 years and is therefore not in compliance and should be placed out of service for all live and training use... I am aware of what NFPA says, I sat on one of the committees that wrote part of 1500. But in 30 years in the Fire Service I have not seen or heard of kevlar protective clothing for fire fighting with the exception of some gloves. Could you post the manufacture and spec. label? darkwing 5 #12 April 30, 2004 It is possible the lines were messed up by disintegrating rubber bands. Personally I wouldn't worry about it if the manufacturer gave it a clean bill of health. From a purely emotional perspective though, if you strap it on you had better be 100% confident in it, so if you think you will have nagging doubts, don't buy it. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
riggerrob 643 #13 April 30, 2004 Daizey, Please tell us which MODEL of reserve was re-lined. Pure speculation on my part, but I suspect that it had Kevlar lines. A couple of years ago, we sent a Strong tandem reserve to the factory for its 8-year check. They returned it with two new lines. Seems that the (uncoated) Kevlar lines snagged on Velcro too many times and good frayed to the point of "fuggliness." Kevlar is also extremely abrasive, so it is possible that one line sawed through another line while trying to clear a tension knot or line over. PhreeZone 20 #14 April 30, 2004 It was a PD reserve.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

I was just curious as to the reasons why a reserved would be relined.... And Rob, as Phree said, its a PD reserve *daizey*
GravityGirl 0 #16 April 30, 2004 You should ask the current owner why. I have found skydivers to be pretty up front about things. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!

That line was extremely vulnerable to snagging on hook Velcro.
KevinMcGuire 0 #18 May 1, 2004 Well, actually, PD does not sell any reserves that have coated lines. Even on those made currently
