FlyingJ 0 #1 August 8, 2004 Hi everyone! Let me start by apologizing for the book I’ve written below… I’ve been lurking for a couple weeks and now that I’ve read enough to feel like I know most of you, I thought I would write to introduce myself. I just moved to Marietta, GA coming from NYC where I’ve lived for the last 5 ½ years. I had an amazing life in NYC – good friends, a career I loved in the city I grew up dreaming of living in – but decided that I was too young (27) to already be doing what I want to do for the rest of my life. I feel like I still have way too much to experience to settle down into one thing and one place. So, I decided to take a year and volunteer with AmeriCorps in Florida. My initial position with AmeriCorps fell through, so I’m now outside of Atlanta staying with family while I search out a new position. The tail end of my plan includes just seeing how things are going and doing what feels right. I might jump on the first plane back to NYC wondering what the heck I was thinking, or I might decide to find whatever jobs I have to work in order to live a life revolving around a hobby or just a way of life. Who knows! For now (until the savings bottom out), damn what a vacation! I’ve been trying for a couple years to get friends to try skydiving with me to no avail. Finally I decided that without a car in NYC it was going to be just too tough getting to DZ’s if I tried it and loved it, so I gave up. A week after I arrived in Atlanta I dragged my brother and dad to all do a tandem jump together. As you’ve heard so many times…WOW…now I’m ready for more. I’m in the process of arranging for health insurance, so as soon as that goes through I’ll be starting AFF. I’m still trying to figure out where exactly I want to do the training, and whether I want to try and go through it all right at one time or spread it out a bit and make it easier on the wallet. (That will probably depend more on how successful I am finding some sort of temp job than anything else!!!). Other than biting at the bit to get involved in skydiving…I’m an avid kayaker and scuba diver and love to hike and camp. While I have done some diving in the Florida Springs recently, I haven’t managed to pitch a tent or get my kayak wet since I arrived in Georgia. I can’t wait to do all of the above!!! I can’t wait to join you all in this amazing community, both online and in person. For any of you in the Atlanta area I would love to hear your feelings regarding different DZ’s and especially if any of you are into kayaking, hiking/camping or SCUBA! Oh yeah, and definitely let me know if you know of any decent temp jobs available!!!!! Best, jason (soon to be aka FlyingJ)Killing threads since 2004. FlyingJ 0 #3 August 9, 2004 Thanks for the welcome! According to the August 14th & 15th thread it looks like there will be a bunch of people at Skydive the Farm this weekend. Might just have to go out there and do a couple tandems and have fun meeting lots of new people! I think I'll be starting AFF the next weekend wherever I decide to do it.Killing threads since 2004. chaoskitty 0 #5 August 13, 2004 You can't go wrong with any of the Atlanta area DZ's. From your other post, it looks like you are starting AFF at The Farm this weekend. Hans is a wonderful instructor. He was one of my AFF instructors as well! My advice is, finish AFF, do your first 20 or 30 jumps at the same dz where you are comfortable with the rental gear/landing area/people, etc. And then go exploring to find your home dz. Some folks in ATL dont like to say they have a home dz.. and you dont have to either. There are always boogies and events going on .. just go jump where you want to, when you want to. I really think you'll have a great experience at all of the Atlanta dz's. I'll be at The Farm this weekend.. I hope to meet you! Pray for blue skies all weekend! We're gonna have some fun!
