gus 1 #1 April 15, 2004 My shiny new xf2 came with rapide links that I'd like to replace with slinks. I have an unused set that have been sitting in a dark dry box for 18 months or so, they should be ok shouldn't they? Anything I should look for before installing them? Thanks, GusOutpatientsOnline.com
Tink1717 2 #2 April 15, 2004 inspect the stitching and the trapping. Contact PD of anything looks awry.Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... darkwing 5 #3 April 15, 2004 sitting in a dark dry box for 18 months is far easier on slinks than being installed and used for 18 months. Look them over, have a rigger look at them, call PD if you get scared by anything. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
riggerrob 643 #4 April 15, 2004 Shelf life means nothing in terms of service life of soft links. Straighten out the Slinks and take a close look for frayed, popped stitching, etc. One broken strand is enough to scrap a Slink. No one has published life limits on soft links, but I would not trust them any longer than a line set, i.e. 300 to 600 jumps.
kaerock 1 #5 April 15, 2004 Are the xf2s using Vectran? And in general, will Specra SLINKs be a problem with Vectran lines? ...contention between different tensile strengths and different materials... -Rory QuoteShelf life means nothing in terms of service life of soft links. GeeeeeeFly 0 #6 April 15, 2004 Xf2 are vectran lined... I doubt there will be any problems with spectra slinks and vectran. I have used them before with no hassles... ~G~ "The edge ... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who know where it is are those that have gone over"

jmfreefly 0 #8 April 16, 2004 Mixing vectran and spectra slinks should raise no concerns. The breaking strength of each material is the breaking strength of the material, irrespective of what it is made out of. The only difference is the wear properties, and slinks don't suffer any real friction (to my knowledge). j
skymedic 0 #9 April 16, 2004 I just have not seen the hassle of installing them to be that great. but then again I am a gear nut. love to inspect and maintain my gear and just really dont see how slinks can be that hard for people. oh and the mix should not raise an issue...I have vectran on my safire and use slinks with out issue. dont try to over think a problem into being. You've obviously never made the mistake of trying to put the slink bumpers on over 2 inch risers When I showed my work to hooknswoop, he just laughed at me Trapped on the surface of a sphere. I just meant that there is a bit more hassle to installing them on vectran lines than on 825 MicroLine, that's all. Personally I need to use a tool to do it. Where as with the Spectra Line, I can just slip them on without having to reach for a tool. Oh. And I'm kind of a gear nut too. I love to inspect and maintain lots of peoples gear. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!
riggerrob 643 #12 April 17, 2004 A Pack Boy tool makes installing Slinks much easier. Red - at Flight Concepts - suggested using grandma's crochet hook to install their Cinch-Links.
