flyinghonu 0 #1 December 11, 2003 Hello everyone. My jumping experience is very limited (for now), I did 4 static lines at Hartwood in VA and I just did my first tandem at Skydive San Diego (which I loved). After the experience and the thrill of freefall ...I'm hooked. I just made a reservation for my second tandem. Any advice for someone who wants to get licensed but is fairly short on time? P.S. Also, any advice on how to convince your hubby that the $$$ are worth it? "Excuse me while I kiss the sky..." - Jimi Hendrix
DShiznit 0 #2 December 11, 2003 Cool. Welcome. You can easily get AFF done in one solid weekend if you have great weather and a lot of money!!! I guess it's possible to get your A in one week if you have the time off, and again, the money. Convince your hubby that it's worth it is up to you. As for me, I have about the best wife you could ask for. I just recently gave up drag racing, sold my race car, so my wife is used to me having a very expensive hobby. Good luck! AggieDave 6 #4 December 11, 2003 QuoteP.S. Also, any advice on how to convince your hubby that the $$$ are worth it? Sure. 1. Get him to do a tandem to show him what its all about -or- 2. chuckbrown 0 #5 December 11, 2003 If you've already got 4 static line jumps and passed the training progression your pretty close to your 5 sec. delay jump. If you're really serious about getting into the sport, save the money on the tandem and put it to better use for your student jumps. Since AFF is a miminum of 7 jumps and you AFF will only allow 3 jumps per day, I don't think you can do it in one weekend (well maybe if you include Friday). Static line or AFF each costs about the same by the time you get to an A license. If money's an issue, stick with S/L. No matter what make sure you get at least one jump in every 30 days. BTW, welcome.

Don't know where you got that, must be DZ specific. I did levels 4-7 + solo in one day.

AggieDave 6 #8 December 11, 2003 Sorry, but this bugs me. S/L is an outdated method and if the DZ she's going to now offers a tandem progression, then she'll end up somewhere about 1/2 way through AFF when done with the tandems. That usually ends up saving money due to not having to have another instructor (such as with AFF's 1-3). In my personal experience, students that do a tandem progression into AFF have a better learning curve and end up being better jumpers through the student program and after they're done. Also, with S/L the learning curve isn't as good, thus you end up needing more jumps to be on the same level of skill as AFF and TM progression students. That's just what I've noticed in my almost 4 years in the sport, though, so take what I say for what you want.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." flyinghonu 0 #9 December 11, 2003 Wow! I left my desk for a couple hours - this is a much better way to spend your day than actually working I think Skymama's advice will work best w/ the hubby. I want to do another tandem so I can have one more jump for sheer pleasure before I get into my "student" mode I am most likely leaning toward the AFF versus the static line. Money is an issue in that we just bought a townhome and so.........my husband doesn't see skydiving as a priority right now - what the hell is wrong with him? I think after he hears me talk about second dive for another month, he'll give in. Thank you all for the advice and the wonderful welcome. meltdown 0 #10 December 11, 2003 Welcome. Your situation sounds kinda like my wife's did in August. She did a tandem, and decided to take up the sport. I, of course, was mortified. Then one day I went and did a tandem, and then I understood her obsession. Now we're both equally obssessed and lovin' it. I've always been somewhat of a tightwad, but this is definitely something I don't mind shelling out the bucks for. In fact, we both bought rigs this past week! Good luck and enjoy. msmithd8769 0 #12 December 12, 2003 I would say, yes, AFF is the better way to go. I was trained starting out on SL and went to AFF when it was still a brand new "experimental" training modality and there were only two places in the US doing it at the time. I also was a SL instructor for many years and it is a tried and true method although most folks these days will knock it and discount it. But it has a respected place in the history of our sport and for some folks, they may want to do it. But I would agree that AFF is the best way to go as long as you have that large initial availability of $$$$. Take care and good luck...._____________________________ "And when the prophet shall arise who appeareth as a bird then the time of the Lord draweth nigh and the flock shall rule the earth."
