Hello and some questions from a newbie

Recommended Posts

Hello,
Just completed jump number 7 today. Jump 9 will be my first solo next week. I have passed all my levels with no repeats so far. I do have things that I need to improve.
I need to improve my exit and arch. My exits have not been good. I tend to tumble upon exit. (We are jumping out of a twin engine Otter).
I also need to improve my arch. I tend to get lazy with my arch. I can't figure out why. I can hold my arch, practice my turns and forward motions fine. It seems that after my forward motion, I can't really get a good arch back. I know that I am just sticking my chest out and not truly arching. I just can't seem to get it back together right away.
Any advice for a newbie? I will be jumping again on Saturday and Sunday (9/27 & 9/28)

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forums! :)
The best advice: Talk to your instructor! He knows you so he will be able to give you better advice than all of us here.

That said, here's my advice: If you want to get back into a good arch, do arch arch and arch. The best thing to help you maintain a good and stable arch is knowing how it feels, and to do so you should practice it often. Arch, close your eyes and focus on how your body feels like.
Don't worry about the exit too much, just go out, arch and you'll get stable.
The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open.
From the edge you just see more.

As my instructors have said to me, "Remember, pecker to the earth." It's your pelvis you need to concentrate on when arching. Shove that pelvis toward the earth.

You'll get it. Hang in there and good luck.

Ready for level 8 (i was flipping out before that level when i did it), heh, heh, heh... Nah, i remember when i was going through the student process that I just kept practicing my arch on the ground... If I wasn't doing anything, or had a few minutes to spare, I'd arch, practice touch to the pilot chute, etc.. I actually would overexaggerate my arch on the ground. Also remember to relax! That's an important thing (i still have problems with that one). See ya at the ranch,

I have spoken with my instructor. (Nicole from The Ranch in Gardiner, NY) She has been great!!! Tough and fair, but always with a bit of a smile.

I did not think of videoing my jump. I think it might be a really good idea. I have to get out of the stupid chest out fake arch I am doing and make pelvis out second nature.

I have already bought a bottle of wine for Nicky and I will get a couple of cases for everyone after my first solo.

If anyone is interested in learning, Nicole and the guys at The Ranch would be a good choice if you ate in NYC.

Thanks for the replies guys.

It will either be Saturday or Sunday (9/27 or9/28). I have appointment both days. Sat at 10:00am and Sunday at 2:00 pm.

Any help on proper form would be greatly appreciated. I know Nicky will be very busy on the weekend.

I got video of several early jumps. like AFf 3 and 5 i think and it was very helpful in showing me where I was screwing up.

I think that is the best tool you can have sometime for seeing exactly what is up, you can even get others to look at it for you, like your instructors or coaches at the DZ.

Welcome to the sky, be careful.

Yep....just like Muenkel said. My instructor told me to keep the thought "Dick to dirt" in the back of my head when trying to arch. (think Ron Jeremy, however gross that thought might be...)

I thnk a problem a lot of us guys have when starting is that we tend to tense up, particularly in the chest area (its a macho thing, I know...). One of the best pieces of advice I've had so far was to relax into your arch, just let in settle in as opposed to fighting into it. That piece of advice has helped my arches tremendously so far.

Of course, take my advice with a boulder of salt, as I'm still a student like you are.
