New to this world, and lovin it!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I've been lurking these forums for awhile and thought I'd finally introduce myself. I finished AFF over the past couple of weekends, and am so hooked on skydiving. It's all I can think about, and I've only jumped 8 times! I had no idea it would be this addicting. I can't really put my finger on it, but it's been exhilerating and spiritual for me in a lot of ways, and I know it will only get better. Anyway, I'm a newb so far and so I'd love any suggestions that you guys/girls have on gear. I'm shopping for a rig, and talked with a jumpmaster enough to get a tentative idea of what I should be looking for. I thought I'd run it past you all also, and see what you think. I weigh 165-170lbs , 5'10 and am looking at a Javelin Odyssey. The jumpmaster suggested a 170 sq ft. canopy and said I would probably have fun with that size and wouldn't be sick of it for awhile. So, I'm looking at a 170 sq. ft. PD sabre 2 canopy as my main, and PD reserve. Any opinions on this rig combination? I want something I can kind of grow into, and won't be sick of after 200 jumps. I really enjoy canopy time, so I'm curious as to what canopies you guys would recommend. I'm going to talk with the JM's a bit more this weekend, but I'd like to get it ordered as soon as possible because I understand it takes 4-6 weeks to build, and these telesis 2's and sigma's are killing me;) Anyway, it looks like a great community in here, and thanks for any suggestions in advance!

Welcome welcome welcome!!!! and congratulations!!!

Yup, this is an addiction and let me tell you it will get WORSE, soon, you'll be eating Crackers and Cup O' Noodles or Ramen soups, living in a carboard box and a PERMANENT BIG SMILE on your face.

The recommendations about your gear looks fine, and you did the right thing asking your instructors, regarding the container, you mentioned a Javelin, good container but they are taking like 24 weeks to deliver, if you want my opinion, take a look at Wings containers, I own one and I LOVE IT, check it out here

Welcome to the great (yet dangerous) sport of skydiving and welcome to the great DZ.COM website and on passing your AFF.

If you can find a used Javelin Odyssey that fits your body for the right price, then go for it. But as CrazyIvan pointed out, you will be waiting about six months for a new one (thanks to Sunpath having a huge military contract). So if you are looking for a new container, there are better choices right now. But regardless of buying new or used, get a container which is freeflying friendly. You don't have to be a freeflier to be flying a good solid safe rig and most modern rigs are freefly friendly. ;)

As far as canopy choices are concerned, you likely won't be disappointed with a Sabre2. I'm currently flying exactly what you want (a Sabre2 170) and it's been a great canopy for me (within a month I should be taking delivery of a Crossfire2 though). But the Sabre2 is not the easiest thing to find used as they get snapped up pretty quickly. So if you can't find a Sabre2, talk to your instructors as there are other good canopies choices out there as well.

Good luck with your skydiving progression, keep us informed (I was just like you not that long ago) and don't forget to be safe. ;)

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
