Welcome.

We have a BASE Forum right here on dropzone.com and it has a very well written article about getting into it right ------> HERE.

Your profile says you've only made 2 jumps so far . . . so, you have a long way to go before thinking too hard about getting into BASE.

Keep an open mind and learn everything you can first about skydiving. Some of the "popular" stuff in skydiving doesn't really apply to BASE, but it's all stuff you need to know to survive long enough to get to the point where you begin to think about BASE.

Good luck!

Doesn't really matter how confident you are in yourself, very few established BASE jumpers will help you if you don't already have some solid skydiving experience.

Attempting to learn how to BASE by yourself is not recommended. Many, many people have died that way on their first attempt.

is there a big difference between the base rig

The short answer is yes.

This isn't really the correct forum for this, though, if you go to "General Skydiving" then you'll see the other thread you started asking that question.

I totally agree with the learn as much as possible before doing any base, and then only do it with someone who is totally competent to teach. But on the flip side I also know somebody who's first jump of any type was a base jump into the Grand Canyon... it caused him to take up AFF ;)

Greetings and welcome.

No harm researching now. I noticed you said you'd like to get some real altitude first. Rock on!

Enjoy skydiving and get good at it. Once your off student status, Hang out with some CRW dogs if you want real canopy control practice, hang out with a rigger to learn about your equipment. <== (good for any one even more important in BASE cuz you are your own rigger.)

Anyway, welcome to the sport.

Welcome!

Yeah, we all have been through that moniker on our way to whatever we are called now. It's no biggie!

Andrea's advice is right on the money about finding info in the forums. As far as equipment goes, there are some really good rigs on eBay fairly often. I will say that folks sell some not-so-great stuff there as well, so ask lots of questions and get some professional experienced opinions from your Rigger or someone you trust.

Enjoy the sport and these forums!

questions about BASE, yet safe

Me thinks you have much to learn, you used base and safe in the same sentence. :ph34r:B|
In the NW there are some very active base jumpers, but I am sure they require many skydives before they will teach you. some gymnastic or springboard diving experience helps.

Don't run out of altitude and experience at the same time...
