Since Thighman requested...

Recommended Posts

I've been lurking. (It's fun :P) But after I busted Thighman out on his inability to properly execute an exit during military static line jumps. He requested that I introduce myself.

So here it goes..

I first started jumping with the 82D Airborne Division in '98. After being in the Division for 6 months as an Old Dirty Nasty Leg.
Yes that is where I picked up the nickname and haven't been able to throw it since. I've come to learn to live with it.

So after 4 years, bad knees, and 40+ (I've stopped keeping track) military static line jumps. I decided to take up skydiving. It was a good choice!

In Thighman's defense, he took me under his wing and has been mentoring me. He's a great instructor/coach and friend! And the brews that I buy for him are hardly worth what he's given me.

Well I find it hard to believe that you can teach Thighman to do anything. I've been nagging him for years now about wearing sunglasses when he's skydiving. Hey Patrick, why don't you tell that story;)
Welcome OldDirty, hope to meet up with you sometime. Any friend of Patrick's is a friend of mine.

OK Mary, since I have to OBEY my MENTOR.
The story goes as follows: I wear contacts and a full face Z1. I worry about loosing my contacts while jumping. Yes, my eye sight is that bad. I wear sunglasses as a back up so the wind that enters the helmet will not dry my eyes out and I loose a contact. It is also nice to have the glasses on once I'm under canopy and pop the shield up to fly.
So, here we are, doing the 120 way at Z-hills this past April. Mary in in the the second trail plane and I'm in the third trail plane. Since I weigh more, I was moved up to take her position in the formation. It was either that or Mary put on more weights. So, I exit and REALLY don't want to mess up, and am concentrating so hard to get to my spot, I "RUB" somebody as I fly by. No big deal. It was sort of like when you exit and you are brushing people to get out of the plane. Of course, the person I "RUB" is Mary. (Sorry yet again) With my sunglasses on, she could not tell if I was looking at her (I was not) or what. We make it down to the formation and all is well. Then when we get down to the ground and start packing, Mary asks me if I "RUBBED" anyone in the air. I think back and go "YES, let me guess, it was you?" (VERY BAD OF ME). So, Mary proceeds to take this very inexperienced skydiver under her wing yet again and explains that: TAKE YOUR GLASSES OFF DUMBBUTT,
and you had better keep a better EYE out while tracking to the formation. So, with that all in mind and the fact that I "RUBBED" my MENTOR in the sky, I stopped wearing my sunglasses inside my helmet on the 120 ways.
Side note: I was asked to try out for a 4-way team and didn't wear the sunglasses for that either.
Side note two: No excuse, but, I didn't leave a bruise on Mary.
Lesson learned: 1. Never RUB your MENTOR in the air unless she wants you too. 2. Keep your head on a swivel while coming down to the formation. 3. Be smart when/if wearing sunglasses.

That was a "rub"? B|

Great news on the four way try outs. Get ready for not having a life.
