divingduck 0 #1 April 15, 2003 So here I am, new to the sport, and absolutely LOVING IT!!!! I attend University of Oregon (we are the ducks...go us..), any way, I was hired as an RA (resident assistant, we live in the dorms and help the new residents and everything), and I just had some policy questions. I know the risk (or, if you are smart about it, lack there of) of skydiving, but I want to be able to take my residents jumping next year. Are there waivers involved? Or am I asking the entirely wrong group of people? What can I do to convince my boss and other high ranking non-jumpers that more people die a year from showering than from skydiving? Any suggestions?? Thanks a million!! If I loved you anymore I would have a stroke
AggieDave 6 #2 April 15, 2003 Call up your DZ, talk to the dzo and present your ideas. He/she will be able to tell you all about the assumption of risk agreements (they're not "waivers") and maybe give you help on direction. Good Luck.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

skymama 37 #4 April 15, 2003 Welcome to the forums! Everyone who goes jumping will need to sign a "waiver" basically saying they won't sue anyone if something goes wrong on the jump and that they realize that the sport is full of risk. *Enter Bill Booth's video here...."you could die, you could die, you could die!" *As far as how to convince your friends that it probably isn't as bad as they think, there is a good article to read in the April Parachutist if you can get your hands on one at your dz. It goes over how many people died last year (33) and from what. I always point out to my whuffo friends that the majority of deaths are from "D" license holders and among the deaths the highest percentage is from hard landings. Then I continue with a simple explaination of high performace canopies, hook turns and swoops and explain how their tandam master would not be doing that with them. I let my parents read the article last year also, and it has alleviated some of their fears about me jumping, although they would still prefer that I wasn't doing it. Amazon 7 #7 April 24, 2003 Ok think of it this way.. Far more people in the Pacific NorthWET slip and fall and hurt themselves here on green slime algae growing on sidewalks and steps and rocks. Think of all the people hurt riding on the roads on motorcycles....on rain slick roads here. How many fatalities in the NW last year in car accidents???? I think statistically far more people get injuries in Oregon Skiiing at Batchelor or Hood or Santiam or at the other ski areas, than get hurt skydiving in the rest of the nation. Think about those Evil trees that attacked Sonny Bono or the Kennedy cousin....while skiing. How many drownings were there in the Sandy River, Deschutes, Rogue, or even the Umpqua. My point is no matter what sport you choose there are risks associated.. you minimize those but when its time to go it really does not matter if you do everything right, you can still die..... Then again you can choke on food while sitting on your couch.. and die right there in the Dorm. Amazon
