a97virago 0 #1 January 30, 2003 Hi everyone! I've been sort of lurking for a while and decided that it was finally time to introduce myself. My name is Larry and just started to skydive seriously this past summer. I'm going through the Tandem/IAF progression and I'm at the Solo jump stage. And loving it!!! Though I've already had my first reserve ride (beer) and first broken bone (tailbone and more beer) My home DZ is Fingerlakes Skydiving in Central NY. It's a great little DZ with really great people. But isn't that true of all DZ's? But I notice there aren't many people from my Home DZ here. Come on guys!!! Well, anything else, just let me know! And I'll post again soon, I'm sure! skymama 37 #2 January 30, 2003 Welcome to the forums! Ok, now you have me interested...what caused your reserve ride and your broken tailbone, if you don't mind me asking? And, just so you know, there are others here who can keep you company with having reserve rides and accidents with low jump numbers, me included. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

a97virago 0 #4 January 30, 2003 Well, my broken tailbone was on jump number #7. Lucky number 7!!! I was coming in on my final, flaring fine, and according to my S&TA/Landing coach, a "rogue" downdraft pushed me into the ground from about 5-6 feet up. Landing on my ... well, you know! and bounced about 2 feet back up in the air. Didn't sit well for about a month. The reserve ride was on jump number 8. Almost exactly one month later, and still sore. You'd think I'd learn. Dive flow went fine, the usual, track, slowed, waved off, pulled and when I looked up, there were 2 canopies above me! Sitting side by side, not a problem. Reached up to unstow my toggles and went from a nice side by side to a downplane. I was still on radio and heard my S&TA screaming CUT!! But he didn't need to, I was already there! Reserve ride was actually my best landing to date!!! But not to be one to give up easily, I'm still at it, and not shaken at all! Even got 4 more jumps in before the end of the season! Larry A-43434
a97virago 0 #5 January 30, 2003 I'd also like to say, that I love the energy and the spirit here in the forums. Everyday, I check a few threads and end up chuckling to myself. I think my officemate thinks I'm crazy. Perhaps I am! Larry A-43434

a97virago 0 #10 January 31, 2003 QuoteGlad your still here! Damn a downplane on #8! that is sick... Have fun! Thanks! I look at it this way. I now know that I CAN cutaway and at least it was a slow mal! But it burn about 1k by the time I recovered. So I can see how quickly things can turn! Now I keep reviewing the emergency procedures, until they are second nature. I guess the lesson is, don't panic, but ACT! Larry A-43434
AirMail 0 #11 January 31, 2003 I also had 2 out into a downplane after an AAD misfire. Mine was on #44. I know what you mean about already being there. It took about 100 nanoseconds for me to check my alti and pull red. It's a good feeling when the main goes away and the reserve is already there. Congrats on knowing what to do and saving your life!!
