Floats18 0 #1 March 24, 2004 I've been reading up on gear in preparation because I'm going to tackle AAF this summer, as I am a poor college student until I start my internship in May. I've been wanting to get my A since I did two static lines last summer. I am confused on a couple things though: 1. What is a BOC, and what is a throw out? 2. I've seen a collapsible slider on some videos but how does a collapsible pilot chute work, do you collapse it remotely? 3. Anyone want to donate a rig? (I'm 5'11" 155lbs, Aquarius, Likes long walks on the beach )--- and give them wings so they may fly free forever DiverDriver in Training
skybytch 273 #2 March 24, 2004 If you've got a $20 bill or two to spend I'd highly recommend buying "Parachuting The Skydivers Handbook" (Poynter/Turoff, Para Publishing) and/or "Jump! Skydiving made fun and easy" (Buchanan, McGraw Hill). Either or both will put you way ahead of the normal AFF student, and will answer pretty much every question you can come up with between now and the time you get back in the air. Best money a new jumper can spend, imho. 1. BOC = bottom of container. The pilot chute is stowed and deployed from a pocket at the bottom of the container. Throw out = a pilot chute that is "thrown out" to initiate main deployment. 2. A collapsible pilot chute collapses once the main canopy is open so you aren't towing an inflated p/c behind your main. 3. Good luck. Edited cuz I found the glossary! linestretch 0 #3 March 24, 2004 Ok, BOC is "bottom of the container" meaning where the pilot chute is stashed. Throw out is "throwing out" the pilot into the airstream. Collapsable slider is done while under canopy. Collapsable pilot chute is done while packing.(you'll learn these as you learn to pack) And you want a rig? Well.....after my divorce, I'm willing to try anything.....he he he hemy pics & stuff!
Floats18 0 #4 March 24, 2004 But still, even if the pilot chute is stored BOC, don't you have to throw it out to deploy? I'm missing the difference between the two. I'll consider buying that book too, It's prolly a lot cheaper than most of the books im used to buying.--- and give them wings so they may fly free forever DiverDriver in Training
skybytch 273 #5 March 24, 2004 QuoteBut still, even if the pilot chute is stored BOC, don't you have to throw it out to deploy? I'm missing the difference between the two. BOC refers to the location of the pilot chute. ROL (rear of legstrap) is another location, but most people today choose BOC because it is more "freefly friendly" than ROL. Either one is a "throw out" - as opposed to a "pull out."
Floats18 0 #6 March 24, 2004 Ahhh, there's the question, Whats different between pull-out and throw-out then? (sorry for the newb ignorance) Its funny being ignorant again, but you guys take care of your newbs better than any other sport that I have been involved in. skybytch 273 #7 March 24, 2004 Simplified descriptions (cuz I could go on and on and totally confuse you ) - Throw out - the pilot chute is stowed and "thrown out" from a pouch outside the main container. Pull out - the pilot chute is stowed inside the main container and is deployed by "pulling" it out with a "pud" (or handle) that is located at the bottom of the main container. Floats18 0 #8 March 24, 2004 Ahhhh, thanks a lot. I'm sure there are tons of things that I'm going to need to pick up once I'm actually training on the equipment and not just dreaming about it. Until then, I'll just hope for sweet dreams.--- and give them wings so they may fly free forever DiverDriver in Training
TimHurford 0 #9 March 24, 2004 Throw out When stowed, the PC is located in a spandex (or cordora) pocket on the bottom of the container (BOC) or in a pocket on the rear of the leg strap (ROL). The bridle has a curved pin sewn to it near the deployment bag, which goes through the closing loop keeping the flaps of the main container closed. The Throwout has a handle is sewn into the apex of the PC. When you pull it out, the PC streams upside down. When you release it at arm's length, it catches the wind and inflates. The inflated PC pulls the pin allowing the container to open and pulls the deployment bag out. Pull out When stowed, the PC is located under the closed main container flaps. The handle (pud, bunny tail) is usually attached by velcro to the bottom right corner of the main container. This handle is attached to both a straight pin and to the base of the PC. As you pull on the handle you pull this pin and the container is opened. As you continue to pull, the PC is brought into the air stream at your side and inflates, and the PC then drags out the deployment bag.
Tonto 1 #10 March 24, 2004 QuoteCollapsable pilot chute is done while packing. Some ambiguety here. A colapsable pilot chute colapses during deployment, and is "cocked" (or uncollapsed) during the packing process. tIt's the year of the Pig.
