BoostedXT 0 #1 March 23, 2004 Ok I am going to be buying my own set up and I am contemplating a few things. These here are what I am thinking...its mainly 2 thoughts. A or B.A: Buy all used gear from my rigger, or gear that they find that will fit me. And go from there. B: Buy a new custom container from Infinity, new, or 1-2 year old cyrpes, and a used main/reserve from my rigger. I am going to be jumping out in denver and the biggest thing that I noticed when I jumped there was how fast you came in on final. After experiencing that I dont plan ondown sizing anytime soon, at least till I get 100% comfortable with the setting and the style of flights of out there. Thats why I think I will be under a certain canopy for a long period of time, and when it does come time to downsize dropping 1 size or so will still fit in the container. Also is the fact of my build. I am 6FT tall and 180# normal weight.....but my stature is very slender. I look about 150. Most rigs I try on seem a bit to bulky and wide around the hip and lower back area. So your thoughts? Is buying a new container made for me, and used everything else a waste of money? Or would I be better off buying all used gear? Used:$2100-$2900 New/used: Container:$1300 Cypres: $800 Main/reserve:$800-$1000 Total:$2800-$3100 Sorry I think differently than everyone else.. Thoughts? Thanks JoeFor long as you live and high you fly and smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry and all that you touch and all that you see is all your life will ever be. Dougjumper 0 #2 March 23, 2004 For your first set of Gear I would look at used first. Consider the Prices like you listed then go with it. I wouldnt suggest New at the begining because you may Bif it up somewhat or so during your learning curve. Make sure you have a compitent Rigger who has the knowledge and experience to pack your reserve Regardless of what container you go with...Get good measurements Then get out...Jump have Fun The glass is half full or half empty doesn't matter. BoostedXT 0 #3 March 23, 2004 Yeah......see I have always been told go used for the first gear, but I looked at the prices and I could have a container made for me and used everything for about $200-$400 more. So the new gear yes is a bit cheaper, but the new/used gear would be more suited towards my physical features. I am thinking the $300 or so more dollars is worth it........but I dont....just curious what you all thought.. Thanks for the info man! GravityGirl 0 #4 March 23, 2004 It depends on what Used Gear you are comparing to your New Gear option. What is the Used Rig that your rigger wants to sell you? How does it fit? Does it have appropriate main AND reserve size canopies? How old/new? It is my opinion to never choose one over the other as a standard. New vs. Used. Instead look at the current available options, then make the best choice. If you want help with a direct comparison, PM me. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear! I am thinking the $300 or so more dollars is worth it........ I had the same dilemna when I was at a used gear dealer's place, and I asked some fellows from my home DZ who were there at the same time, and the general answer I got was: Nothing fits like something made custom for you. My first jump on my Infinity sized to me was shocking - I had no idea leg straps could be anything remotely approximating comfortable. I'm totally happy I got a container/harness sized to me. And because I knew I was going to dirty it up, I hosed it down with a couple coats of ScotchGuard before I started jumping it. I will be sad if my rig gets dirty, but in perspective, the rig will still do the job and fit well, and that will make me happy. -=-=-=-=- Pull. BoostedXT 0 #7 March 24, 2004 Yeah see thats what I am contemplating. I am going to be jumping used cypres, main, and reserve no matter what...so why not spend the extra $300 or so dollars and buy a new container that fits me properly? I just need people opinions....and thanks for the help everyone. skybytch 273 #8 March 24, 2004 I owned a couple used rigs that didn't fit me quite right before I got my first new custom container. The difference in fit and comfort was remarkable. If you can afford the extra for a new custom harness/container system, and you're okay with the idea that it might not look so new after a few biffed landings... then why not get one? You're the one who's spending the money and you're the one who'll be jumping it.
BoostedXT 0 #9 March 24, 2004 Done deal......I am ordering one.......if the bytch says so its gotta be a good idea!...OMG I called her bytch for the first time ever...... These are my colors....what do ya think? LOL yeah I designed it and now I cant wait to get it. skybytch 273 #11 March 24, 2004 QuoteOMG I called her bytch for the first time ever...... LMAO! See, I knew you'd do it eventually. QuoteThese are my colors....what do ya think? Looks sweet, but I'd be careful with that white - it will get dirty very, very fast even if you never biff a landing. I've found that white is best used for stripes, pinstripes and embroidery (small areas); darker colors are better (ie stay looking cleaner longer) on the big panels. BoostedXT 0 #12 March 24, 2004 Wil it get dirty even if I am a crazy Italian that everything has to be clean? I need things clean....windows....counter tops.. cars...everything...I am a clean freak....How would I clean the rig? Yeah I had to call ya bytch.....you help me out so much! jlyons 0 #13 March 24, 2004 I think you will like having a new container. I also was baffled when it came time to buying gear (being a newbie and all) and spent many a night harboring over different gear sites, new and used, and reading responses to threads such as these. In the end, I decided on a new custom container and bought the CYPRES, the reserve, and my main used. There are some great deals to be had if you search long enough. My advice is to order your container and while you are waiting for five to ten weeks to receive it (in my case eleven weeks) you will have more than plenty of time to shop the web and local deals. Don't be disconcerted...there is cheap equipment out there. I was able to buy everything but my container for so cheap that I was able to spend much more on customizing my rig (i.e. colors, hip rings, etc.) I paid $150 for my Sabre 170, $400 for my CYPRES that was good for five more years, and $200 for a PD160R with zero jumps on it! As for the wounds you might put on your rig...it is inevitable...I biffed my rig so badly in my first 50 jumps... way more than anyone at the DZ, but no matter how many grass stains or cement scuffs I acquired, a little Woolite always did the trick (even on light gray). Sure I was pissed a few times in the beginning, but the people at the DZ simply made me realize that those beauty scarrs are what give your rig its joie de vivre, or its personality. It will be, after all, a new part of your family.
Clownburner 0 #14 March 24, 2004 QuoteWil it get dirty even if I am a crazy Italian that everything has to be clean? I need things clean....windows....counter tops.. cars...everything...I am a clean freak....How would I clean the rig? In that case, I would DEFINATELY not get large white areas on the container! Those are a real PITA to keep even remotely clean, and you don't want to be wet-scrubbing your rig during every repack (even if you did, that white would start to look nasty between washings!)... I agree with the bytch 100% here, dark colors on large areas stay looking good longer. 7CP#1 | BTR#2 | Payaso en fuego Rodriguez "I want hot chicks in my boobies!"- McBeth
BoostedXT 0 #15 March 24, 2004 OK I really love the first color scheme I designed but what about this one? It is a bit darker.. still has the red/black/silver theme and white for trim.....thoughts? Joe PS- the red for the botton flap actually matches the container color....dont know why its so dark. For long as you live and high you fly and smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry and all that you touch and all that you see is all your life will ever be.
