mr2mk1g 10 #1 March 19, 2004 I've just written a first draft of a gear FAQ for newly qualified jumpers in the uni club I'm involved with. We’re in the UK so some of what I say may sound odd, such as DZ’s requiring RW training before FF, but that’s the way it is over here. It’s long (4500 words) so I don’t expect too many responses from you guys. It will hopefully still be fairly accessible in its final format though, as each question will be duplicated at the top of the page in a list of hyperlinks taking you to the appropriate answer. It'll be for inclusion in our website. It’s designed to point new jumpers in the right direction for what kit they might want to think about buying whilst trying to steer them away from going out and killing themselves with a stiletto 135. Any opinions will be welcomed.
Nick 0 #2 March 19, 2004 Might be worth mentioning a bit about booties on RW suits, also a mention on weight belts could be of use. Nick Gravity- It's not just a good idea, it's the LAW!
vt1977 0 #3 March 19, 2004 Generally good stuff Matt - maybe at the top of the gear section it would be wise to stress in big letters to speak to instructors about kit choices (both canopies and containers) and to get any potential purchase looked over by a rigger. On the subject of reserves, I like QuoteYour reserve should be about the same size as your main. but I guess there would be no harm in including the words "or bigger". Also I think you should include some mention of staying within the manufacturers recommendations for their weight and experience level. As for... QuoteIf not, the Zak knife is perfectly acceptable and you’ll probably be able to find one floating round for free. remind me never to lend any of your lot a knife on a 20 minute call! mr2mk1g 10 #4 March 19, 2004 Cheers maybe at the top of the gear section it would be wise to stress in big letters to speak to instructors about kit choices -It will be appropriately headed with some kind of general advice along those lines at the top. no harm in including the words "or bigger". - true some mention of staying within the manufacturers recommendations for their weight and experience level -Very good point - will include remind me never to lend any of your lot a knife -hehehe, I must have about 3 or 4 and haven't bought one. mr2mk1g 10 #5 March 19, 2004 I'll add some on booties... do you not think weight belts would be better left to later? - this is aimed at people with 20 odd jumps.
Nick 0 #6 March 19, 2004 True about weight belts if your talking about people with that number of jumps. Nick Gravity- It's not just a good idea, it's the LAW!
nacmacfeegle 0 #7 March 19, 2004 What about chucking in links to manufacturers, dropzone.com, skydive mag websites, and other online resources, eg Skydive Arizona's excellent safety resource. Maybe snag some of the stuff from the recent series in the UK mag on the same subject. Looks good though.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. mr2mk1g 10 #8 March 19, 2004 We're looking at maybe creating a safty and training section within our forum which will include documents like that and links to sites with safety resources. Links to all the manufacturers would be good too, but probably best placed in a dedicated links section - I'll suggest it to the guys who administer our website. I did forget the link to The Mag claissifieds though - cheers.
meatbomb 0 #9 March 19, 2004 Just a wee point (as the nun said to the gorilla): Quote by the size of your canopy in square feet.not Quote by the size of your canopy in square foot. Also, I like this: Quote but no F111 canopy should ever be loaded above 1:1. in combination with this: Quote Your reserve should be about the same size as your main. So everyone's loading their mains at 1:1 then eh? Hehehehe....couldn't resist... See ya tomorrow! I can show everyone my "gay" canopy design...--- Swoopert, CS-Aiiiiiii! mr2mk1g 10 #10 March 19, 2004 ah you arse - you know a reserve doesnt really count as an F111 canopy for the purposes of that statement. Edited to make it "no F111 main canopy". You managed to find transport to the southerns then?
