BASE GPS Observations

Recommended Posts

Can people that have jumped Non barometric GPSes please share thoughts on the accuracy with regards to altitude measurements close to the wall and away from the wall.

Can you also post which GPS you use if, even if you use one with a barometer.

Kris.

FWIW, with barometric GPS (Vista C) it's horizontal "steps" (about quarter or half a mile) due to reflections/interference from the wall that are the problem. Vertical data seems to be reasonably accurate. Overall, the value of data is almost nil.

Please elaborate :)
If horizontal data far away(a mile) from the wall is good, why is the data useless?

Got my friends GPS log today.

This was from a two way from the ITW. I jumped an edge 205 and he jumped an edge 305(barometric alti). After some analysis like distance(both horizontal and vertical) between the two gpses and map overlay during the logging period the conclusion is that the GPSes were accurate(within usual error tolerances).

The 205 data was much smoother than the data from the edge 305. Since the barometer was mounted on his helmet, this is not surprising at all.

On another jump(solo during which the head does not move much after exit) from his logs...the barometric GPS data was quite good except for one point where the reading on immediate points(one sec interval) was the same(possibly when he looked up to check his flight path).

The opening points seemed to be quite accurate based on the map overlay.

Motionbased.com got even better...

Welcome to the new MotionBased Player! Consider this a sneak peak at the next generation, cross-platform activity simulator. It's in BETA and needs more work before launching site wide, but we couldn't hold back. Player activities are chosen at random. If you see the "Player" tab when viewing an activity, that's your ticket in.

Its 2D map and satelite image overlay with playback. B|. The BASE logs that I have uploaded to MB.com are private.

Its cool for laptop users like me that cannot install the full version of Google earth.

Kris.
