Reserve question....

Recommended Posts

I am thinking about buying a used reserve that has had 4 jumps on it...............is there a quota on how many jumps a reserve can have on it before it is no longer considered safe to jump?
I ask this because a fellow skydiver thought there was a max amount of jumps a reserve canopy can have and then is required to be retired.

20 jumps is the unofficial life on most reserves.
After 18-20 years and more than 40 repacks, you should consider retiring it.
I would cheerfully buy a reserve that had been jumped two or three times.

My main question here is about the previous owner's main packing methods. How sloppy was he?
What shape is the main container in?
Does that model of main have a reputation for spinning up?
How many jumps on that main line set?
You are not seriously considering buying his old main are you?

I have sold quite a bit of used gear, and often times (especially reserves) I will send the gear to a DZO or STATIONARY Rigger's Loft, or reputable gear store before I get payment. I do stipulate that there will be no price negioation and if the buyer rejects it, they pay shipping both ways. The seller should let your rigger inspect it before you commit.

That made me think about it in reverse. I've had 2 rides on one of my PD 143s, and its 3 years old. It has 9 repacks and 2 rides, and I asked myself if I would buy it now? Yup. I'm still jumping it, I know it works...lol and it has plenty of repacks/rides left on it. As long as it is in good condition, I'd buy a used reserve. I'm jumping a "used" reserve now, only difference is I was the one that "used" it.....lol

My other ride is a RESERVE.

What is that based on? I know that Ravens were used as mains and reserves (of course not the same exact canopy), so if you could jump a raven as a main for 1000+ jumps why couldnt you do more than 20 jumps on your reserve, Also Pd has a demo program where you can demo a Pd reserve, I know they dont retire the reserves after 20 jumps, they do inspect and keep them in close tolerance for a factory reserve. I jumped a Pd 106 with close to 50 jumps on it, and it landed, and opened perfectly, I was wingloading the hell out of it also. So would you sell your reserve, after 20 jumps, or even worse just throw it away because it was asumed unairworty?

Ask a riger to look at it. If a rigger says its good to jump...Jump it.

I have a PD113 with 6 rides on it. (I chop a lot). Its fine.

I had a Raven II...years ago a Raven could be used as a main or a reserve...I put 370 jumps on it as a main. It worked fine all 370 jumps.

4 or 5 jumps is nothing to a good canopy. Have it inspected and if the rigger says its ok...buy it.

Find a way to jump the same type and size reserve as a main once as well.

Edit to ADD:

After 20 years I would get new gear...Not that there is anything wrong with 20 year old gear...but think about cars for a second...A 2004 Mustang is better designed than a 1984 Mustang.

Because we maintain reserves to much higher standards.
If a reserve canopy does not look like new, it does not get repacked.
For example, many skydivers routinely jump mains with dozens of tiny holes in the tail skin. ONE small hole means that a reserve canopy is grounded until a Master Rigger can sew on a patch.
