Whap happens when you deploy your rig in front of a high powered fan

Recommended Posts

On that subject, has anybody ever actually done a 'pull off' ,it's currently very windy here in the UK and a friend joked about doing it, i've not even seen or heard of it before (standing backwards and just pitching your PC) but im sure theres someone out there mental enough to try it...???

I saw a video of some nutter deploying a base rig off the back of a (fast!) moving trailer type affair. Ouch. As legend has it, they then went on to do two ways, one PCAing the other as he got dragged off.

Mybe i've just got a dirty mind, but a 'pull off' contest just brings up all the wrong images... :P

There's several shots of those on Thread the Needle II, A Finer Thread.

I've done it.

It's much less scary with a round, especially if you are over big water that you can definitely hit.

The potential for an off heading opening, especially if the wind isn't quite high enough, on a square, is quite worrisome. Imagine a 180, with the canopy diving underneath you (and back toward you) as it pulls you off, and the resulting possibility of entanglement.

Prior to BASE being BASE some early tower "stunt" jumps were done in "pull off" fashion, and yes rounds were used. Pull offs were popular at one time at air shows from slow moving aircraft flying around 80 mph. Wind speeds on high towers can easily meet or exceed that level.

I suppose the modern equivalent would be a floater launch.

We'd probably see tower pull offs on "Stunt Junkies" but none of the old guys have the legs for it, and the new guys wouldn't even think about landing a round on solid ground.

Break out the T-10s . . .

I've always said I'd be happy to jump a round, as long as it was with someone else's container, and into a body of water

:D

I'm going to have a hard enough time finding a square BASE canopy appropriate enough for my size, let alone trying to land a damned round.

It looks like they used an airboat for the fan. I have always wondered what would happen if you were to go to one of the powerful outdoor tunnels (think the L1) with a slider up rig... :) Anybody tried it?

airstream isnt wide enough, no landing areas, canopy deployment too variable... (L1)

Maybe strapped down (slider down, not up!) turned up as high as she'd turn while wearing a balloon suit. Then pull the trigger. The poor man's catapult . . .
