SkydiveMonkey 0 #1 March 3, 2004 How do the two canopies compare? I've got about 100 jumps on my hornet 170 and am looking at a smaller and nicer rig with a tri 170 in it. skybytch 273 #2 March 3, 2004 One's a seven cell and one's a nine cell. See if you can jump the Tri before you decide to buy it.
phoenixlpr 0 #3 March 3, 2004 Triatlon is in production, Hornet is not anymore.
SkydiveMonkey 0 #4 March 3, 2004 I know that much. Wanted comparisons on turn rates etc (I'm guessing the hornet will give a better swoop). Guess I should have been more specific edit: chances are I'll keep the hornet and sell my rig with the tri, but who knows?____________________ Say no to subliminal messages
ianmdrennan 2 #5 March 3, 2004 Depends on what you like. Personally, I think the Tri's a step down (I've never been particularly impressed with their flare anyway). I'd keep the Hornet, you'll probably have a lot more fun on it. That said, just because I like it doesn't mean you will so, try 'em both and see if it does something for you. vt1977 0 #6 March 3, 2004 I recently went from a 9 cell to a 7 cell of the same size (Sabre 135 to Spectre 135 – so completely different canopies and manufacturer from what you’re looking at but this might help a bit so I’ll continue… ) and it felt like an upsize of maybe half a canopy size. The Spectre (7 cell) certainly “feels” bigger than the Sabre (9 cell) did. Things I love about the Spectre are the openings and the solidity, particularly in turbulence. The landings are easy, but don’t have the same glide that my Sabre did. I definitely enjoyed landing the Sabre more. The main thing I liked about the Sabre was the landings – I hated the openings and it was horrible in turbulence. In terms of flying the two, the Spectre feels more solid. Toggle pressure is slightly greater on the Spectre but once a turn has started, it seems to turn a little faster than the Sabre. Riser pressure is slightly lighter on the Spectre. Glide – the Sabre was a little better, but with a bit of rear risers the Spectre will get me back from a bad spot easily. Depends what you’re after – I wanted the nice predictable openings and the solidity of a 7 cell but have lost out on the 9 cell landings. Having said that I’ve seen people swooping the arse out of a Spectre… at the end of the day it’s not the canopy, it’s the pilot! Depends what you want from your canopy – if you’re happy with your Hornet maybe your option of keeping it and selling the tri with your rig would be the best one. But definitely put a jump or two on the tri before you make the decision! hth! Vicki
meltdown 0 #7 March 3, 2004 I'm with you. I love the way my (wife's) Sabre lands, but love the way the Spectre opens. The Sabre's swoopy landings are much more fun than the step down landings on the Spectre. They both fly great, although the Sabre seems a tad more responsive. I'd love to get a canopy that opens like a Spectre and lands like a Sabre.

FrogNog 1 #9 March 3, 2004 I jumped a Triathlon 190 and a Hornet 190 both around a dozen times before I decided which one to get. I found the Hornet was like a Triathlon on "greased bearings" - it was just smoother all around. The Hornet also has a flatter glide (which most people say is a good thing) as expected for 9 cell vs. 7 cell. The Hornet has a much stronger first stage of flare. Pull too hard and it will pop back up. Front riser turns on the Hornet can be a pain; both Hornet 190s I've flown have a tendency to buck, presumably because of a steering line length issue. I believe the Triathlon was nicer on front riser turns, but I can't remember for sure. I believe Triathlons are better-configured for "casual CRW". I know with some common mods people do use Triathlons for that; I haven't heard of anyone using Hornets for CRW. My WL was 1.1 for all my flying, so YMMV. My advice is just "jump them both and compare". The differences should be big enough that anyone jumping both would detect them and be able to choose. -=-=-=-=- Pull. ACMESkydiver 0 #11 March 4, 2004 Aerodyne said that they have recently redesigned the steering line group to give more flare, better turns...I can't wait, mine is coming in any time now! ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. cruzlite 0 #12 March 4, 2004 What version Tri ? If it's the new 5.0 (new ZP) I would advise you take closer look... I love mine.. Opennings are sweeet! Control response is immediate, & smooth.(no hesitation or whip) Flare is also immediate & very effective while at the same time, the canopy is difficult to stall. Rear risers & deep control inputs do require considerable effort, for an old fat man or small girl. (haven't tried fronts yet) I load my 190 at about 1.2... DancingFlame 0 #17 March 4, 2004 Did you ever demo Icarus Safire2? It is the canopy with Spectre-like snivel and it flares even better than Sabre. Definitely, I'd recommend Safire2!
meltdown 0 #18 March 4, 2004 I actually borrowed a Safire 2 for 1 jump a few months ago. I don't know if it was the pack job or what, but it sniveled for like 1000 feet. That kinda scared me a little.
