pocbase 0 #2 April 23, 2006 The Soul Flyers were (and maybe still are) jumping modified PD reserves. From what I saw and from what they told me when they visited they perform better slider up than slider down. Maybe it's one of those. Still different context and category of jumper i suppose. The bums will never win Lebowski, the bums will never win! Enfin j'ai trouvé: Bieeeen
pbla4024 0 #3 April 23, 2006 Relined I think, steeper then original. Zun did it for Loic while ago. http://www.base-jump.com/index.php?Tp=articles&Type=article&Lang=fr&Id=22 Fido

nicknitro71 0 #5 April 23, 2006 Such a canopy existed: It was called the Dragon sold by Vertigo: A PD reserve with the trim of the Lightning. PD reserves although very well built have a very shallow angle of incidence and poor pressurization slider down. If you are jumping a big wall with a WS then they might work OK. By the way, even unvented Dragons open poorly slider down while vented Dragons open great but have little flare power. Reserve for reserve, a super raven makes the best BASE canopy and needs not much "butching".Memento Audere Semper

smelly 0 #7 April 24, 2006 way fuckin stupid! during my early days (5 yrs ago) I jumped a PD 235 of a 400' pillar with a somewhat tight lz for this canopy. Needless to say it was an interesting sl.down opening and very fuckin fast canopy ride. Great flare and nice soft, landing though.

avenfoto 0 #12 April 24, 2006 my first 5 jumps were made on a pd254 that i borrowed out of maddog's sorcerer.. all slider up...2 at nrgb then 3 at a terminal tower that saw a world record attempt a few months later... great idea? probably not the greatest.. fun? well.. that was the bite that startred it all.. i progressed from there to a raven 3 for some slider downs, then a fox265 for all of the above... pocbase 0 #15 April 24, 2006 I don't know why exactly they opted to modify PD reserves, i suppose it's with Loic and them being sponsored by PD... What i do know is that Zun is far from stupid, and the same goes for Loic, Claude, the late Val and the others. A South African jumper well known to many us base jumpers did 300 jumps on a spectra lined tempo and only just recently purchased an ace. Modifying a reserve or any canopy is a very bad idea indeed but people in the soul flyers and tim o t league are sufficiently knowledgeable to decide for themselves. Selling modified gear over the internet is looking for trouble... pocThe bums will never win Lebowski, the bums will never win! Faber 0 #16 April 24, 2006 just dont see the reasson, specialy not if your a front figure in this sport and pushing the limits, its about signals out can you belive the media jumping up n down incase somthing happens and find out that this person did jump a modifyed reseve while for the same mony he could get a BASE specific canopy.. pbla4024 0 #17 April 25, 2006 It's old thing. Unless I am much mistaken they switched to BASE canopies while ago. Fido
TomAiello 26 #18 April 25, 2006 QuoteI don't know why exactly they opted to modify PD reserves, i suppose it's with Loic and them being sponsored by PD... PD manufactures the Ace and Blackjack specific BASE canopies. When I talked with John LeBlanc about it at PIA, he said he'd recommend that anyone contacting PD to ask about BASE canopies go straight to Consolidated Rigging. I doubt they'd put sponsored BASE jumpers on PD reserves, that being the case. There's also a post from John somewhere in this forum on that topic.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
pocbase 0 #19 April 25, 2006 Ja know about the ace and black jack being manufactured by PD for quite a while now. This was 2 or maybe 3 years back, not so long ago that the soul flyers jumped here. There weren't any logos on the canopies but they did tell me they were modified PD reserves. I asked because all 3 openings they had on a 3 way off our local slider down 'e' seemed... well... dodgy. A more experienced local on the load also noticed this so it wasn't just my novice eyes. Suppose the best is to just mail them and ask for the whole story. pocbase 0 #20 April 26, 2006 Well Loic replied and here is the whole story: "Salut, On utilisais des Pd reserve a ce moment là parce que : - ces voiles ont des super caractéristiques de vol (posé doux, bon comportement en pilotage freiné style Précision d’attérissage). - Le tissus a une qualité vérifiée et stable Les voiles de base ayant progressées depuis, il semble que la Ace et le Troll se sont rapprochées en qualité de vol avec des ouvertures peut être plus régulières. Donc en ce moment je saute en Troll. In English: We used PD reserves then because: - The canopies have excellent flight caracteristics (soft landings, good handling on breaks with accuracy style landings) - The material used is of stable and verified quality. Base canopies having evolved since it seems the ace and troll canopies have come closer in terms of flight caracteristics with maybe more consistent openings (than the PD). So at the moment I jump a Troll"
