It depends on who you ask. ;) At the time, Yuri took full responsibility for the fuck-up just so everyone would shut up about it. [Edited to add: he beat me to the post--I guess the early account remains the historic account and trumps any intervening accounts. So there you have it from the horse's mouth.]

There are several accounts on rec.skydiving, but I'm not going to post links this time. If you want to read them, you'll have to hunt for them.

That video is a stolen moment from the Lemmings '95 video...although it looks like this particular clip was probably stolen from Hard Copy, which received permission from Will Forshay to air it.

There's another, similar video a year later (I think it was '96 but it might have been '97). The star of that show was Lee Werling.

As Rhonda mentioned, that video was from Bridge Day 1995/Extremes and I currently own the sole copyright. Ya gotta love how easy it is for people to copy your videos without permission and put them all over the internet.

Trying to understand in order not to make the same mistakes again.

Let me know what you think of that:

Usually in multiple ways you define the exit order to stack the openings.

In that case you can see, according to the opening sequence that the girl is slider down and the guys slider up. It is logical that the girl should pitch first (canopy opening faster).

As she is making the count she will definitely leave before the other ones if they are not vigilent enough , best is to count together to get the rythm and exit exactly when you want to exit.

The cameramen should leave almost at the same time to be able to clear the girl's pilot chute.

The second guy should leave a split second later because he is behind the 2 others and he shouldn't push them at the exit.

Leaving really late, the second guy ends up head low because he is focusing on the girl, he is too high when she throws and as she has an offheading, he can't avoid hitting it.
The unstability as well as the offheadings are not the main cause of the incident, with a 35° right offheading, the cameramen would have probably cleared it.

Timing seems to be the critical point to avoid such situations, the easiest could have been to spread the 3 way on the widht of the bridge, which might not have been possible at that bridge day.

Don't be fooled by the video. He probably has faster reaction time and better spatial awareness than anyone you've ever run into. He was getting out of the way the split-second he saw her start to pitch.

I've got video, of almost the same thing happening on a bandit jump at this location. Dropping through the arches on a 2way the high man exited first, and the low man had to ball up to avoid his deploying canopy. A strong crosswind probabily saved him more than anything else as it pulled the PC and canopy off to the left and out of the way of the 2nd guy. The LOW person SHOULD always give the count as they almost always seem to leave ahead of others. In this case the High man gave the count and left a split sec ahead of the other, which is all it took for the other too get directly above him considering they were jumping through a very narrow part of the bridge.

Hello,
That is cool video.
"Combat BASE" circa 1995.
John Hoover was at Bridge Day then,
Seth Blake and I enjoyed a nice two-way that day,
Nic Hartshorne had not even made his first BASE jump yet.
I know it's off topic, ten years just flicked by.
