Dude, drive the San Juan skyway. It's fantastically scenic, and good for killing a day. Plus there's this wee little cliff somewhere there...

i went to school in durango and lived there for 5 years. as far as dropzones moab, ut will be the closest. when i lived there that dz did not exist. then there is a dz in alb., nm which is about 3.5-4 hrs drive south. moab should take you about 2.5 and you can hit up the awsome cliff there as well. call jimmy or marta at apex and they will put you in touch with the local jumpers.

not many local sites in durango. i don't know the "e" that tom is refering to. last time i was there in nov. i looked into a short "e" that you can see from town (didn't have my rig so i didn't research it too hard). don't know the legal status though. ask some locals in town about the land it sits on. may be national forest.
if you want some hot action in the bars hit up the ones all along main street. there are drunk college chicks in every one of them. will be a bit slow being that it is summer. also, there is 420 all over that town, just ask any long hair, dred-lock, smelly hippy!!!
