Jasmin 0 #1 January 27, 2005 I have a dumb question... I saw a CV that said they were overall world champion for 2004. The last world cup or championship I heard about was malaysia 03/04. That would have meant douggs was world champion for the duration of 2004 (Go douggs!) Slim isn't around to organise the 04/05, so I was wodering if a new championship has been set up or is it just a typo?xj "I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with the earth...but then I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with a car either, and that's having tried both." DexterBase 1 #2 January 27, 2005 It's my understanding that the World Cup event didn't happen because both main organizers passed away this year. With short notice, there really wasn't anyone who could make it happen in such a short amount of time. I wonder who will step up and star organizing the even now. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
TomAiello 26 #3 January 27, 2005 The idea of having an "overall world champion" is kind of silly. It's neat for the press, and the tourists, but I don't think it matters so much to the jumpers themselves. Heck, as long as it helps them do whatever they're doing (getting access to sites, getting money to jump, whatever), I have no problems with pretty much every BASE jumper describing themself as a world champion.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

NickDG 23 #8 January 27, 2005 Dennis M. called me in late August of 1987 and said, "Let's have a competition, we'll call it the form and accuracy competition." "Where," I asked. "Bridge Day '87." I said, "You mean like with striped shirted judges?" And he said, "Yeah, just like that . . ." NickD BASE

TomAiello 26 #11 January 27, 2005 I have no problem with any jumper calling themself "world famous," "best in the world," "world champion," or whatever. People use those kinds of labels to promote themselves, which helps them (and often eventually the rest of us) get gear, cash, travel expenses, or other help defraying the costs of jumping.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

TVPB 0 #13 January 28, 2005 There is nothing wrong with competition. And there is nothing wrong with pursuing an activity on your own just for the love of it. That is the beauty of freedom & choice. Competition breeds excellence. It improves equipment technology, jumping technique, jumping quality, controls prices, attracts spectators, strokes ego's, etc. Where would we be without a friendly low pull comp? RayLosli 11 #14 January 28, 2005 Whenever I feel and think I am an Excellent BASE jumper..... I pat myself on the back and go to another Competition or a event. Then when I am there... I actually meet and learn from jumpers that are Truly Talented and Far Better than I think I am. Along with upping your learning curve every event. I have the opportunity to jump with people from other countries in the world that normally I would never see or talk to. Let alone jump with. You jump with people that stand-out of the crowd for, Good Reason. Some jumpers at these events are World Class.... that Prick of a Aussy... Douggs is one of them. You find that talent and skill is not just limited to friends in your own back yard. . .
