base428 1 #1 January 3, 2005 I couldn't resist posting this. Here are two conflicting documents from the NPS. Maybe one of the more friendly rangers will someday smuggle "the list" out of the park and into the hands of a BASE jumper. NPS discrimination has got to stop. We do no harm to NPS lands and would simply like to enjoy our sport, just like the climbers and hang gliders. Conflicting Document #1 NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office Day/Date: Thursday, August 24, 1995 Broadcast: By 1000 ET 2) Information Request - New River Gorge is beginning preparations for Bridge Day, the annual October event which draws about 200,000 spectators and nearly 600 parachuting and repelling enthusiasts who jump from the 876-foot-high bridge. Due to increased competition for jumping sites nationwide, more and more parks are experiencing such activities. New River Gorge would like to hear from parks that have these activities to learn about their experiences and to develop a list of BASE jumping suspects that other parks would like them to keep a look out for. The park has had considerable success in apprehension, sentencing and extradition in the past. Contact Tony Liquori by phone at 304-574-0165 or via cc:Mail at "NERI RM&VP Canyon District". SpecialKaye 0 #2 January 3, 2005 Good one, Jason! Maybe Fred can use this to do something about the bureacrats that seem to think it okay the idea of allowing rapellers and hang-gliders to use the parks while arresting basejumpers for using the parks in the way we enjoy. It kinda pissed me off when I supported Fayette County in 2001, just 5 weeks after 9-11, and here they are allowing the rapellers to use the bridge...to include blocking traffic while a ZIP line was run from side to side. There was no reason why the jumpers that supported the community couldn't have used the catwalk, same as the rapellers were being allowed. Guess they can't continue to deny the existence any longer! Thanks Jason! Kaye
TomAiello 26 #3 January 3, 2005 Quote...and hang-gliders... You might note that because the NPS has lumped paragliders in with us, most hang gliders (and USHGA members) are generally in favor of allowing us (and their friends who paraglide) to play in the parks.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I dont recall the organizations name recently started for BASE, but maybe they should team up with USHGA?? Josh Morell www.imagethisphoto.com
LouYoung 0 #6 January 5, 2005 I just recently read someplace that the USHGA doesn't want to push for paraglider access for fear that it may hurt hang glider access.
NickDG 23 #7 January 6, 2005 >>Day/Date: Thursday, August 24, 1995<< By this time, 1995, Rangers are openly videoing on top, and below the NRGB during Bridge Days. They without doubt have a boxed set of BASE videos worth fifty bucks. They also did (do) field (bridge) sobriety surveillance. But, we are a small part of the nonsense (to them) they deal with, so don't get paranoid. Wait a minute, someone's knocking on my door, I'll be right back . . .
