QuoteWould anyone disagree that heading correction should come before doing a "canopy check" and grabbing your toggles?
Heading correction should be your top priority after opening.
Avoiding object strike should be the first thing on your mind after opening. Once that priority is taken care of, the next thing should be landing safely.

I'm not trying chew this guy's ass off by pointing out Technique faults or the Blame-Game.
It's about responsibility and being on your first BASE jump.
Your first few BASE jumps are about the only few times were you actually give up some of your Responsibility.
A first time jumper share his responsibility with the person who trains him up and puts him off.
I have Trained up and put off several first time jumpers off a Antenna in the cold, dark night.
Most of them very closely resemble Bryan Klindworth, In number of skydives and eagerness
to do his first BASE jump.
Ever time I help one climbed out around the cross brasses and leaned out over the ground.
I folded there Pilot Chute, put it in there hand and tell them everything is clean and they
"Are good to go."
I still find myself talking to them over there shoulder and repeating all the technical rundown on
Launching, Body positioning and what to do after the canopy opens. Mostly because I am as
scared for them and there safety as they are of jumping.
Do you know what reminds me of "MY Resposibility" for there first jump more than anything ???
That would be the knots and those little twinges you feel in the pit of your stomach.
From the time they launch. Till the time they do that 180-turn around and land safely.
Just like Nick and Jon. I am glad you are safe and sound.
I also meant what I said
"I Hope your next BASE jump will better for you and you have fun."

QuoteI went head down on the exit, then got canopy. I did a canopy check and grabbed my toggles. I saw the guy wire coming close so I tried to correct but didn't give the canopy enough input.

having in mind it were his first jump,i can understand why he did a canopy chek first,we al learned so in the skyenvioment.
However i noticed that i only chek my canopy as somthing is wrong(an uninflated cell or similar)Basicly i just feel the canopy, and only look up in case it dont feels right, that way i can focus the top prio. to not hit anything nearby.

So you said the legal siuation has been settled? Can you please tell us what the charges and fines were. How did you defend yourself? What was your plea and what punishment did you recieve? This would be way more educational than your story. Thanks.
Brian, there are many, many more lessons to be learned from this incident than the ones you listed. I hope you realize this and just didn't put it into words here on the net.

edit to add: you, Jason, are invited also.
..I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw my bath toys were a toaster and a radio...
except that i had a gun to his head and told him he had to jump or i'd throw his dead body off.
actually, that's not true. i was much further up the tower when he jumped.

and i already told him i was glad he was alright.

the time from exit to wire strike, I've been told, was about 4 seconds. My sense of time during the jump was distorted so I take their word for it.
The other things were: I originally said I was going to ground crew about 2 hours before we left, but then said I was considering jumping shortly after that. By the time we left we talked about it a bit and I decided to jump.
We practiced body position, canopy control and landing techniques multiple times before the jump. I was also asked about night landing skills and I told the others I was fine, I had actually done my third night jump the weekend before.
I think when everyone recollects what happens there is a bit of an emphasis on different things. I didn't want to post a novel about it, just the events of the jump itself and some background.
The consequences were: 8-9 hour rescue.
legally: $1100 restitution bill, and provided I pay it on time the trespassing charge is dropped.

Quotehow about all involved get on a conference call or meet in person? I could schedule and coordinate meeting after the 29th if interested.

I don't really see the need for it. I stand by my original statement... I have no interest in jumping again.
It's all done with as far as I'm concerned.

added: so unless anyone wants to explain it all to 570, this is finished.

I knew at least as much, and probably less, than you, when I made my first tower jump.

That's how we did it and todays jumpers have the benefit of our experience to take advantage of. I don't have the fatality list memorized but wasn't one of the very early ones a wire strike?

I'm glad you are okay.
