Dedicate a solo "A" jump from 405ft, 2 sec delay, to all of the troops fighting over across the pond in IRAQ or AFGhanistan, especially the guys in my unit. Wish I could be there with ya!

Well, it was a BASE jump. And I do know a BASE jumper who was just over there.

I'll keep an eye on the thread. Let's not turn it into a debate of US foreign policy, or it'll end up in Speakers Corner for sure.

I also think we can keep this discussion in this forum instead of moving to Speaker's Corner as long as everyones opinions of the wars are kept out. Dedicating your flick to friends abroad on this forum is definatley a way to get it out. I would have loved to flick on this anniversary but only got a skydive out of it.
However, my time in the sand is what turned me from skydiving into BASEing, I guess BASE jumping is the only thing that could match the exhileration of the trips I have taken. I hope to continue to flick through the years now that I am out of that life. For the few of us that do or have done both, and all others from all countries, I hope we continue successfully. I hope to soon be BASEing again with some of you in October. Later.....MATT

Actually I believe BASE is about LIFE and DEATH at the same time. They are one in the same. YOu can not have one without the other.

There are _plenty_ (believe me, I have to read them all) of threads in SC about that.

Regardless of what you think about the politics of all that, Leroy made a jump to honor his friends who are there. It's been my experience that professional soldiers only partly fight for their countries. Mostly, they fight for the men (and women) beside them. It's a kind of comradery that I find reminiscent of what we experience in BASE. There are differences between being shot at with friends, and standing on the edge of a building with friends, but sometimes I think the differences are not as large as we might think.

This is a very insightful bit of wisdom, young jedi.

BASE is, I think, about different things to all of us. And even about different things to the same person, just at different times.

Many of us have gone through a phase where the juxtaposition of life and death was very important to our BASE jumping. Personally, I'm surprised I survived that part of my own career. I'm greatly relieved that not every jumper has to go through that bit.

At the same time, I've found some jumpers who have made it past that have somehow acquired great personal wisdom in the experience.

I just think you guys got me wrong..[:/]
Whith a line saying "sep 11" i read it as the hole thing and not about paticular people arround.
I have jumped in honnor of example Dexter which i think is one hell of a great guy.I know he did things down there people wont imagine,i also know that he did not do what he did whith out scars in his heart/mind.
I jumped in honnur of DW as he died, and i did it becours of what he did to me.

Sorry but to me its just looks wrong to call it sep 11 unless you dedicate the jump to thouse who died that day.

Leroy,im sorry about this,i had no intention to make the jump you did to thouse people look bad,i did neither intend to sound like a guy that dont think its great what theese guys/gals are doing(for all of us).

I feel that to be able to BASE jump one must first recognize and process certain inevitabilities. Those being the worse case scenario that there is an accident and that accident turns into the death of a either a comrade, that you have shared a portion of your life with staring off the edge of some crazy object, or yourself.

I have felt the same type of feelings in both war and BASE jumping. Of course the two situations have different elements that bring you to a serious life threatening one. The people around you are natural sources of support. The friends I have from fighting and the friends I have BASE jumping experience the same type of feelings and gratitude for me as I do them. These friendships are forged much quicker and stronger than other friendships of mine and rightfully so. Tom is correct that for most, fighting isn’t as much for the good of the country, but for the people around you once the lead starts raining.

You volunteer freely for both situations and understand the consequences, hopefully. I truly believe that death is a consequence of life and not as much of an integral part of the continuation of life, even if it is a factor and inevitability. Death is definitely the least desirable part of existence but something you have to risk to maintain the way of life you are most comfortable with if it warrants it. Later.....MATT
