WS rig for general BASE

Recommended Posts

I'd like to put together a WSExtreme/Flik Vtec 220 set up for WS BASE, which I'll have the opportunity to do in mid-August (on an otherwise non-jumping trip). I'd be loading this at 0.8:1 (w/ camera helmet and WS). I'll be skydiving the canopy a bit before hucking with it, and then I want to jump it as much as I can before actually heading out on my trip.

My question is on object options. With a smaller canopy and a first pin rig isn't the right equipment on a wide array of objects, so what are my options? I can make it to the spud state S for at least two weekends. Should I just limit myself to that, and jump hard for the weekends leading up to my trip?

Hey manbird

A ws pin rig with a 220 flik - is a "normal" base rig IMO! It can be jumped off pretty much anything you have the bollox for ;) You may choose to go for jumps with larger LZs if you are low experience.

Spud s is a good place to consolidate experience in short space of time.

Are you coming to Europe on this trip of yours? Italy? Then let me know :P

long flights, j

How much do you weigh? A 220 is pretty small.

This setup will work well on any BASE object. 0.8 loading is a bit higher than ideal, but not by too much - i come close to that on many of my BASE jumps. A pin rig works very well for the entire altitude range. So your options are wide open ;-)

This is what i would do: if you intend to use this as an all-around BASE/wingsuit rig, get a vented 245.

If, on other hand, you are going for a lighter/smaller wingsuit-only (or slider-up only) rig, get a non-vented 225. Vents will be a waste of money, weight and packing volume on slider-up jumps. You can still jump this setup comfortably at the legal bridge.

bsbd!

Yuri.

Steve,
Interesting to hear you're doing more BASE. Say "hi" if/when you get a chance.

find / -name jumpers -print; cat jumpers $USER > manifest; cd /dev/airplane; more altitude; make jump; cd /pub; more beer;

The WS extreme can be reconfigured to "standard" configuration, so that's not really an issue.

160 naked. I realize that 220 is small, which is why I was asking.

Uncle Charlie. Yes, I am coming to Italy! And I would love to meet up for a trip to the big E off of which you've flown. I was born in Milano, but I'm not actually Italian (my parents were traveling hippies). I have family and friends that I'm visiting. Hitting Amsterdam, Prague, eastern Germany, and Croatia, as well.

After a little more thought, I might consider a 245 FLiK Vtec, a larger WSExtreme, and a Softcock (vented/valved + the Softcock for local stuff). 245 is still a little under what I really want, but I just can't afford two canopies (especially with a two week European vacation for two).

My girlfriend wanted to look at rings (scary). I humored her. When we totalled up the price for rings, I commented that we could take a huge vacation for that price. Remember when Homer went to get a lot at the cemetery for Grandpa, and when "tennis court" was mentioned, he bought a tennis court? It was kind of like that.

Screw it. I just ordered a wsExtreme to hold a 245, and am hoping to God that I can pay for a rush job. Anyone want to sell me a FLiK Vtec 242 or a Fox 245 -- right now?

As soon as I get a rig together, let's do some stuff.
