XXXX wrote: Hey there, just arrived in xxxxx (site deleted) and there isnt another base jumper to be found. Have you been here? any suggestions on sites or locals? Went to the tourism office, the local heli service, and bars. Found the number for two jumpers but can't get ahold of them. Just wondering if you have any info to share, Drove down from germany for the weekend, thanks xxxxxx (name deleted) .

my response
Hi XXXXX, you sound like you are in a predicament. Why did you not set up something before? Think ahead next time. follow tracks in the snow or something. There is something not quite right about this request. there are around 40-50 active jumpers in Germany, many who go to this site, why are you there alone? doesn´t add up. Maybe i am just being weird so I will post this dialog without your name to see what others think, if I am doing the right thing by not helping you.
take care,
space

If I was going anywhere aboard I would always pre-arrange locals / knowledge before I got there.

If I knew locals that could help someone that did not make plans - It would depend on how well I knew that person to pass on help - I mean I would not want to be linked to some tossa with people I hooked them up with. If it was someone I did not really know I would explain to them in great detail why I did not help them.

Its not hard to get contacts in any part of the world these days.......... just a little effort. BASE is not a lazy mans sport!

just my "resting my ass" 2 beers worth!

Hi Space --

I'm with you. Here's how I go about it:

If I don't know the person at all, I'll hunt around to see if someone can vouch for them. Not just that they jump, but also their attention to detail as well as their ethics. If someone I trust says they're good to go, then I'll put the mystery jumper in touch with other locals in the area they want to jump in (with the locals consent beforehand).

When it comes to site specific detail, I'll only share details with someone that a) I know very well and can trust or b) if they come with a very solid, strong recommendation from an experienced jumper that I know very well.

All in all, I completely agree with your response. You've been around the block several times and with the limited info you received, something appears to be astray.

C-ya,

Bryan

I have a few more details on that situation. He did post, months ago, looking for locals for a planned springtime trip.

The jumper in question is a US serviceman who was essentially incommunicado over in the middle east, and got a surprise weekend off on a stopover in Germany, which turned out not to be when he thought he'd be in Europe.

It sounds to me like he was pretty above board about the whole thing.
