TomAiello 26 #2 February 18, 2004 Quote what is a usual wingloading for bASE ?? "Textbook" or "Standard" wingloading is .75 pounds of exit weight per square foot of canopy. Some threads on this: Wingloading for Dummies: Follow the link in the top post for more discussion. Wingloading Canopy Size Quote do you use different size canopies depending on the altitude of the object/type of jump ?? Yes. But in general the practice is not nearly as wide spread as it ought to be.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
nicknitro71 0 #3 February 18, 2004 Dwain posted this: Quote Take your naked body weight in pounds and add 100 to it. This is your ideal mid-range canopy size. Add 20 if you are going to be doing lots of objects where you land in really bad landing areas or if you prefer landing in deep brake approaches. Subtract 20 if you are going to be doing lots of jumping in high winds (eg. antennas or big walls) with good landing areas.Memento Audere Semper

piisfish 140 #5 February 18, 2004 thanks to both of you for the info. Would a lighter loaded canopy open faster ??scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
brits17 0 #6 February 18, 2004 If anything I would come to believe an heavily loaded canopy would open faster. However I don't believe wing loading makes much of a difference when you're talking in the range of +/- .25. Experienced wise ones, correct me if I'm off. _______________________ aerialkinetics.com
piisfish 140 #7 February 18, 2004 from the experience I have, lighter loaded canopies tended to open brisker, and heavily loaded canopies tended to snivel more... but maybe it's also due to the different type of canopy. I dunno, that's why I ask scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
TomAiello 26 #8 February 18, 2004 Brit is correct. A more heavily loaded canopy will tend to open faster, all else equal. Also, a smaller canopy will tend to open faster, as will a canopy with ZP on the topskin, a canopy with a steeper attack angle, etc, etc, etc. There are a whole lot of things that go into opening speed. Unless you are planning on freefalling under 200', I doubt you'll go wrong with any of the BASE canopies currently on the market. The differences in opening distance for the full range of "normal" configurations is going to be less than 10 meters or so. You can extend this (in both directions) by doing some heroic rigging, but in general, whatever your wingloading, you are going to be ok.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
