World BASE Cup update

Recommended Posts

Today the jumping began in Malaysia. Approximately 50 jumpers made about 100 jumps from the 73rd story. I spent the day sitting on a small ledge on the wrong side of the railing outside the 60th floor directly below the exit ramp. As the jumpers flew past I timed and videoed their freefall.

Day 1: 120 practice jumps
Day 2: 139 competition jumps

Every one of the 54 competitors got at least 2 jumps on day 2 (I think) and some got up to 6. The launch point is a specially built steel ramp off the balcony of the 73rd floor. The entire floor is one unused empty space and the jumpers have each staked out a patch of the floor for packing in between jumps.

The landing area is a relatively small patch of grass in a popular park directly below the twin towers. There's a target laid out and some representatives of the army measure landing accuracy.

This phase of the competition is flat-and-stable exits where the competitors are judged on their stability, body position, sub-terminal tracking, proper delay (4 - 5.5 seconds), and landing. So far everyone is doing excellently.

I've been posted on the 60th floor to time the delays. I'm strapped to the WRONG side of the safety railing 600 feet up (which is bothering the building's safety and security staff, but we've demonstrated the equipment is adequate) where I can see both the exit 130ft above and the PC pitch 200 - 300ft below. Another judge sitting next to me has a clever optical device for measuring the on-heading performance of the canopy. Usually someone is standing behind us with a video camera. It's a little challenging to get people to volunteer for that job because it's about 1,000,000 degrees (celcius, of course).

I'm thrilled to report there have been no significant injuries. We're now in a two-day rest period and we begin again on Jan 1. The next day we move to another building for the second phase. More news later.

News Here.

Australian clinches overall sky dive title.

KUALA LUMPUR Jan 5 - Australian jumper Chris McDougall clinched the overall title in the Malaysia International Championship of Xtreme Skydive/World B.A.S.E Cup 2003 and also helped his country win the team event with partner Tony Coombes here Monday.

McDougall also topped the Aerial Aerobatic category while compatriot James Freeman placed second overall with an added top spot in the Accuracy Landing category.

Brazil's Luiz Sabia emerged third overall.

In the Canopy Opening category, Croat Nenad Pesut placed first while American Raymond Losli took second and Australian Mark Clinton Spicer third.

The third edition of the championship, at the Petronas Twin Towers and KL Tower, started on Dec 28, last year.

Six rounds were held from the 73rd floor of Petronas Tower 2 and four rounds were off the KL Tower.

...Australian jumper Chris McDougall...

Oh, he's gonna hate that. He almost socked me the last time I used his full name. He said it made him sound light a knight or something...

Congrats, Douggs!

Congratulations to Douggs, Jimmy, Ray, Nenad, Sabia, Greg, and everyone else that did well.

I wanted to be there, but instead I spent Christmas and New Years (our wedding anniversary) with Marcia and Trevor. It was all warm and fuzzy!!!!

Sounds like it was a fun time like always.

Jimmy and Nenad have really shown consistency through the 3 years. Well done!

Slim, good on ya mate!
