Recommended Posts

Hey lal
i was at me local dropzone the other day and there was some base tapes playing
and every1 on them stands at the top of the object and jumps out

why dont any1 start 10 metre's back and run and jump out ?

is it to do with loseing balance and falling wrong or is it just the video's i have seen poeple wenrt running up and they useally do ???

There's all those countless stories of object strikes going through my head at every exit point... so I know that anytime there is the option of running off a solid object I'm going to do it! It just gives my butt a little better odds of turning around a 180 with line twists by giving me more separation. It does require a fairly clean approach which is rarely the case.

10 meters might be pushing it... just a few steps seems to work well. I want to be certain where my last step will be so that it's not short or long!

I haven't noticed a difficulty with balance or body position as long as I think about my body position before I launch, but I don't do aerials either - I'm sure that adds many more variables to the mix - if I was doing them I know I'd rather complete a gainer and end up close to the cliff than stall it out five feet farther out.

Notice I speak only in the first person - everyone should make their own decisions.

You've obviously never seen any of my video.

I'll post it somewhere with a link later this weekend.

It's hilarious. I jump off one cliff and almost make it to the other side of the canyon.

For me, running and jumping is a more natural approach. I can usually get sufficient separation after a 2 second delay to not care too much if I get a 180 (providing conditions are still) since I have enough time to deal with it. This provides a relaxed exit and a relaxed exit is more likely (IMHO) to be a stable exit.

It's an acquired taste I guess...

Some relevance to why you are asking this question………(perhaps…….)………??????

is that a question for me ? or you were just using it to point out that link ?

if its a question for me
i just asked cos i wonderd why

I once did 400 base jumps in 1 day and always ran and jumped
but reason was , i never had a parachute on my back and had to run and jump out as far as possible from the cliff , to ensure i land in deaper water hahaha

just pointing out the link.......... its an interesting discussion on the distance gained from an object from a static exit.

Aren't you in Australia? It seems odd that the folks at your DZ are doing standing launches.

Check out Progressing in BASE by Pete Fielding (the Godfather of Australian BASE). He makes it pretty clear that the objective of the launch progression is to move to a full sprinting launch for maximum separation.

Maximum forward speed at launch = maximum separation (obviously, this is a generalization, but a good one).

When a run-up is available, it is always advisable to take maximum advantage of it.

...twin towers...

There's a diving board type platform contructed for jumpers there. Almost everyone does a running launch.

Few and far between are the antennas that allow running launches. But I do love them.

Many aerials are easier to perform from a standing launch.

Ah, I've seen the video you are talking about. It was shot at the first competition there. The launch platform was added the next year--and there were no object strikes that year (unless you count striking the building below, in which case there were two).

It's a once-a-year competition. Other than that, that building is off limits and has very tight security!

The first event at the Petronas was a New Year's Eve Demo.
We had no ramps, (*most) jumps just from the edge, with no strikes.
(*We did a few jumps from the gondola, no strikes).

Correction:
The next event at Petronas was the first competition, and actually, the
ramp was in place then, however..........some genius built the ramp so
that it went UNDER THE RAIL. Yes, it's true. They took all the time and
money to build a running launch ramp, but built it under the rail.
The ramp was about 15 feet long, and extended about three feet past
the railing and past the plane of the sheer building. When I first saw
it built as such, I was surprized. Anyway, so jumpers were running
down the ramp and over the rail which was about a six inch hurdle.
Seen as a safety hazard, they disallowed running down the ramp.
