JOY 0 #1 November 30, 2003 Greetings BASE jumpers, Just to let you know after a recent vacation in California we enjoyed a short stay with Jean Boenish. We were able to convince her to dig through an amazing garage full of skydiving and BASE memorabilia and find a box containing the original BASE patches. These are the patches that originally came with the staff T-shirts at Bridge Day in 1982, any of you who have seen them know they are high quality embroidered patches. We now have a limited supply if anyone wants one. They belong to Jean and she asks for $15 per patch. If interest is high, we will find someone who is able to reproduce them, already know of two sources that could help us with this. Please let us know if you want one, the only requirement is that you have made a BASE jump. joyhgc1@aol.com Happy Holidays! murrays 0 #2 November 30, 2003 Joy, I'm not a BASE jumper but I've been an admirer of Carl Boenish's work since I started jumping in 1980. I would love to see Carl's skydiving and Base films re-released on DVD. I feel it is a crime that they are no longer available in North America. I know there are an awful lot of other people that feel exactly as I do. Carl's work is too important to both sports to have it disappear. Is this something you ahve ever discussed with Jean? Is it something that you could discuss with her in the future? This is something we discussed in this thread a while back. I know that I am ready and willing to help bring his work back in whatever way that I can.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
JOY 0 #3 December 1, 2003 Hi Murray. This is Rick. Joy wanted me to respond. You are right about Carl's library. We spent two nights with her last month and one whole wall of Carl's old studio, in the garage, is full of shelves with at least 100 rolls of 16mm film. Of course most is skydiving, but out of the early Parachutist magazines until about 1981 half of them were Carl Boenish photos. He was a master of color, action and keeping his head still. I've never jumped with Carl that he wasn't sticking a camera on your helmet. I will again talk to Jean both about the patches and getting the film digitized. Carl's history really tracks the very beginning of both relative work and BASE jumping. Jean is a great idealistic person and it's hard to get her to trust anyone with the original film. I will work on it since I'm now having some of my old BASE tapes put on digital format so they don't continue to degrade. murrays 0 #4 December 1, 2003 Rick, thanks for your reply. I'm glad to see that someone close to Jean (you) is into digitizing material to preserve it for the future. I hope that a person acceptable to Jean can be found to perform the digitization of Carl's work. Carl's photography and film(s) with interviews with the RW and BASE pioneers would make for some kind of a documentary!! There are many great stories that should be told with a camera running.
