Open Faced Helmets

Recommended Posts

I own a Hurricane by Sky Systems..a little costly but a nice Helmet. If you own a Pro track it easily mounts to the side. The adjustable dial in the back snugs the Helmet up to your forehead and neck area. I really enjoy my helmet it also lets me wear my Oakleys snug with no way for them to blow off your face in Freefall. Worth checking out...B|

Has anyone out there PERSONALLY had a good headbashing while wearing a Bonehead ?

I'd like to know, as I own a Mindwarp and really like it. I know the graphite shell is strong, but this talk about padding is making me a little uneasy. A long time ago I owned a Cooper hockey helmet with lots of good padding. The thing split in two when I hit my head on a rock or something under several inches of water. It did what it was designed to do - sacrificed itself to protect my head. I've also worn Protecs in the past.

So I'm not interested if "a friend of a friend" has experience with a head blow wearing a Bonehead, but if it's happened to you, please post and tell us your story.

I own a Total Head Coverage helmet, looks cool on vid's & photo's, holds my pro dytter nice & tight & is as snug as can be.

I have no confidence in it whatso ever, I started with a pro tec & hitting my head diden't even come into it, legs, back, wrists, ribs were my biggest worrys.

I woulden't go back to a pro tec now even though I know how safe they are, I'd like to start jumping W/O a helmet, not for the buzz or anything, but for the feel.

Thanks for all the replies. I would like to second this request. I would really like to hear about personal experiences with your helmets and how good of a job it did saving your head. I definitely am in to attractive gear, but bottom line...Is it gonna protect me?

[reply I really like my Velocity.

I have a Velocity too and althought it is comfy and protect pretty well the head and forehead, it is made of fiberglass so heavier than anything made of carbon fiber composites.
For the typical week end jumper it's ok but I would suggest to go for something lighter, especially if a camera may be added to the helmet.

Just my .2 cents...;)

The newest version of the Velocity is waaaaaaay lighter than the original. Recently got a couple in the shop and I was impressed at the difference in weight.

Hi Lisa
Some questions about it:
Do they have the same design? Same chin strap? what are they made of to be lighter now? Light as a Mindwarp?

Thanks, i'm curious:)
Edit to ad:
The skydance photography web site doesn't give much infos about the new version of the Velo; are you reffering to the Ion, which is made of kevlar

Yeah, she's referring to the Ion.

Nope, the Velocity II. It's the new, updated version. It's about the same weight as the Ion; both are a bit heavier than a Mindwarp. Chin cups are available and both are camera friendly.

I don't know how the weight reduction in the Velocity was done. The paperwork I have says fiberglass construction, but it doesn't specifically reference the Velocity II.

Same look and finish as the original Velocity. Even with the weight reduction it looks and feels sturdy.

I will check out ski helmets when I get an unbearable urge to replace my trusty 20 year old protec:

http://sl.cometsystems.com/r?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.skihelmets.com%2F&qry=ski+helmets&rnk=9&aff=inkt&v=7&origin=asearch&tmpl=0Aen

I've looked into helmets for skaters, kayakers, etc. but they don't cover the ears.

edit - using the 'helmet finder' there are 80 models from abot 70 to 150 US$ (sure beats the hell out of our skydiving helmet selection). There are 3 different ratings (ASTM, CE-European, and SNELL). This almost certainly means they are much better for protecting your noggin than most of what we use (no standard at all to make any comparison/judgement).
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

The classic skydiving student Pro-tec is, I believe, a watersports (i.e. jetski) helmet. (And we all know it has serious ear protection.)

I found a pro-tec skateboard helmet once that looks sweet - way cooler than the classic skydiving student Pro-tec - for about twice the price. It had about 10mm thick cloth-over-webbing ear protection, which I expect would still protect the ears well.

I vote for pro-tec because it's comfortable enough, has lots of padding, and is cheap. It ain't cool, but my budget doesn't include allowances for "cool" right now.

Someone told me Pro-tecs aren't freefly friendly, something related to how high they stick up off the forehead. I don't know anything about this since I'm still trying to fly RW properly. :)

I've caught the knee of a jumper who corked on a freefly jump square on the top of my head while whereing a mindwarp. Closing speed at time of impact may have been up wards of 20-25 MPH. Left me with a hell of a headache, and him with an extremely painful and swolen knee, and one mindwarp with not even a scratch on it.

They are not graphite. They are carbon fiber. Theres a little bit of a difference.

but this talk about padding is making me a little uneasy.

I think all this "concern" that has cropped up is out of proportion.

Don't hit your head on anything. People have been skydiving without helmets for ages. If people spent more effort improving their flying skills, and not getting on loads outside of their scope of experience, they's be ine.

When was the last time anyone heard of multitudes of people getting knocked out on their skydives.

That's the trick. I jump without a helmet, and have for 17 years. Choose your loads, choose your conditions. Don't expect any helmet to help. Motorcycle helmets (far more capable of absorbing impact than a pro tec) do squat at 40kmph (25mph) and even if they help - your neck is next in the energy disipation chain.

Don't hit your head on anything.

If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
