Faber 0 #1 June 19, 2003 When should i be worryed about releasing my toogles on a SL jump?im thinking of getting sucked into the ground, when i release them...Im thinking of how low you go before you go for rear risers. Only thinking jumping over hard ground here. Stay safe Stefan Faber
TomAiello 26 #2 June 19, 2003 In general, I will go for the toggles on any appreciable canopy flight. In other words, if you open and your body instinctively starts to PLF, grab the risers. If you open and think "ok, now land", then get the toggles. The trick is, don't dump the slack. In other words, when you pop the toggles, bring them all the way down, then slowly bring them up. It's kind of like doing a flat turn--you ought to be able to flare out at any point. If you just pop the toggles and dump the slack, the canopy will surge forward and down, potentially (as you've pointed out) smacking you into the ground. But if you bring them all the way down, then ease them back up, you ought to be able to flare at any time. If you're worried about it, just grab the risers. A riser flare/PLF combination is always going to be better (in terms of personal injury) than flaring yourself into the ground.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
base689 0 #3 June 19, 2003 QuoteWhen should i be worryed about releasing my toogles on a SL jump? I am not the greatest expert of SL jumps and of low freefall jumps, but few SL jumps I did and few low free fall (65m, ending with 7.5 s of open canopy flight) jumps I did. What I can suggest is that if you decide to go for the toggles, you must go immediately for the toggles, release them but in this case, being not too far from ground (where an abrupt release up of the toggles would sink you into the ground), from the toggles position at your waist/chest (just released toggles), you must go up with your hands with a slow and continuous motion. You should complete the motion from waist/chest position to full flight in at least 2÷3 s. If you guess that you can manage these 2÷3 s of "canopy starting to fly properly, then go for the toggles. Otherwise, go for your risers and flare them at the appropriate time, just remembering that flaring on risers is VERY VERY effective: few cm down cause a big change in flight of canopy. But I am not a big expert in this matter. I hope that some fellow of ours way more experienced than me in low stuff pops in into this thread and give us a good advice. I remember that the Canadian wonder of low jumps said once on the BB that SLing from 40 m he was able to fly with open canopy for about 20 m in horizontal, so it is a good number of s of open canopy flight. DaveO 0 #7 June 19, 2003 BASE 622 does 123ft S/L jumps all the time and he has landed with toggles every jump so far. I tried to attach a picture but it exceeds the maximum attachment size.So if you go to the BASE board photos and click on earth. Look for image named 622. It's a 123ft static line."When it comes to BASE, I'll never give advice, only my opinion"
