NAMING NAMES: PART 2

Recommended Posts

Just a reminder to all in this forum:
Naming names does not just refer to site names--it refers to PEOPLE'S names, as well!!
Why do you think you keep seeing descriptions such as 'that sheep lovin kiwi' or that tattooed aussie, etc...
I've said it before and I'll say it again...
THE NPS AND OTHER AGENCIES MONITOR THIS AND OTHER SITES LOOKING FOR INFORMATION TO PUT ME IN JAIL AND YOU TOO, IF YOU MAKE ILLEGAL JUMPS.

This is only a "virtual' BASE jump. Given a choice between a cyber jump and the real thing, I'll take the real thing. So don't fuck it up for other people by letting the cat out of the bag.

Again--Tom, if you see my real name mentioned in any post, please edit without prejudice.
thanks everyone.

Is it not possible to tacky the site naming thread to the top? I would say to put the no site/people naming rule in the description of the forum... but without all the explaination, people will just keep asking why & posting anyway.

Or even tacky a concise post at the top with the site/people naming rules & if anyone has any questions as to why those rules exist ... include clickies to the relative threads.

Just a thought. This is going to go on forever in here.

Yeah, it's possible. There's something sorta like that on the Incidents Forum when you go to post or reply to something... I think it's been suggested here concerning site naming; not sure why it hasn't happened yet. It probably will eventually if the problem gets too out of hand.

EDIT: This is the thread I was thinking of: http://dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=307713;search_string=base;#307713.

Probably because Sangiro has more things to do in his life than nursemaiding all of us. I'm sure he'll get around to it, but I'm also sure he's got plenty of stuff to do already, both related and un-related to Dropzone.com.

Problem's already out of hand. Just shouldn't happen.

There is going to be a problem with this with a BASE forum that skydivers feel comfortable in posting in. With BLINC most skydivers will not post similar posts as they do here. They feel comfortable with posting in the DZ.com environment and will post things that they would never do on BLINC. There are several newbie BASE jumpers (myself included) that feel more comfortable posting certain topics here than on BLINC. So for a skydiver who posts several posts a day on Talk Back – its no great shakes for him / her to make a blasé post naming people they know or sites they have heard about – most skydivers do not know the struggle, time, effort, realism, fear, etc etc that goes into this sport. I do not mean to sound patronising (if i do) , but there really is such a difference in approaches to these two different sports that you will have clashes.

Just my thoughts

Not a smart ass question, really...But why do most of the posts on this thread include either someone's name and/or picture? If it is something to worry about, why does the guru who's name starts with the letter after S, always post his full name, and others publish their photograph as an Avatar?
...FUN FOR ALL!

Because different people have different levels of comfort regarding this subject. Some people don't mind if others know exactly who they are. Some of us do.

Because some people don't mind and others do. So it's best to err on the side of safety.

I personally don't mind, but others try to be a little more discreet (me discreet? HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! ;)).

my understanding was that a simple picture of someone jumping off a E, or A or whatever won't get them in trouble (depends on the picture really, a picture of someone displaying their face etc jumping off a well known building might) but its more when someone says X and I were jumping X last thursday when the cops showed up, wow it was a blast, we got away! That's when people get in trouble and you start getting knocks on people's doors. Simply saying my name is X and I am a BASE jumper with X jumps hasn't got anybody in trouble (or has it?).

It's not about getting someone in trouble for something the've already jumped...It's about maintaing access to an object that is or could be jumped, and protecting those who will be jumping it from getting busted. In addition, by not site naming, you have the added perk of not letting some darwin candidate burn your site by digging a hole in the ground with his body there.
(And yes, I can think of at least one example where footage has gotten a jumper busted after the fact, as well.
So again, in short, it's just not a good idea.

I'm pretty sure that he decided, personally, to be fully public. Perhaps he faces no job consequences, or feels that he's willing to take that risk.

Some people do that. Most people don't. Many people strive to avoid any public name (or face) recognition.

By and large, the "public" BASE community that you can see on-line, or in videos, or at the dropzone, is a very small subset (and not necessarily representative) of the whole group of BASE jumpers.

Just because the "public" subset, that you can see, has chosen to behave in this manner does not mean that every jumper has chosen to do so. Less still does it give anyone a right to "out" a jumper in any way.

From your and motherhucker's posts lies the essence of this thread. Its a respect issue. For whatever reason you might be a person that has no qualms about the public knowing your involvement regarding BASE, or you might not. I was thinking about this issue this morning as I was running, and I came up with a lot of reasons you wouldn't want to "name names". Most of them don't have anything to do with BASE jumping, or getting "caught". Like I said, it's a respect issue, leave the individual's name to that individual. At least, that's how I see it.

Because some people are all talk and don't really BASE jump. Oh wait, that's me.
