opening skock

Recommended Posts

Hello
I'm a very experienced arm chair base jumper" I've
seen it a thousand times on TV". I always thought...
I would love to do that! So one day a visiting jumper
shows up on my local DZ, gets checked out by the
DZO and I show him around. We get talking and I
find out he has 14 base jumps. Wow I'm all ears.
He asks if I would like to see his base rig. YES where
the hell is it! It's in the car, he says...I didn't know if
it was ok to take it out here. I look at him like he had two heads! We go the the car and he pulls out
a reactor "green" "w/fox or mojo don't remember we didn't unpack it". Now my eyes are as big as footballs. He explains how it is packed and used for different alt/delays etc. Now this guy is about 20 yrs
and strong like bull. He tells me that 3 sec or less
delay, slider off openings hurt like hell. I like 1000'
snivels for my tired old bones. Are the openings really that rough? I would still like to try it some day
" I would take a course" but don't like the idea of being pounded on opening!

Most of my jumps are slider-up, but none of my BASE openings, slider up or down, have been nearly as brutal as some of my FX slammers.

Others here will be able to explain the "whys" better, but from what I understand, because the canopy is free packed, rather than bagged, you get some initial de-celleration from having the whole canopy in the air for those brief moments before it starts inflating.

Yea that makes perfect sense...and makes me feel
better too! I love adrenalin but not crazy about pain.
They offer a course up here w/supplied gear , starting with ballon jumps every now and again.
I believe they direct bag you until you good enough
for a short delay. Some day!
Thanks...mike

Thanks for the link Faber..I think! It would appear from what I read some openings could be very hard
but not all the time. I try to search next time first.
