Recommended Posts

this is what i did when i needed to get a weight vest for OTHER people to use when jumping with me..(im a big boy)...

...i bought a cheap waistcoat from a charity shop, then I went to the local plumbers merchant and bought some blocks of lead...worked for me:D

i normally just strap household appliances to me. toasters and small tvs work best. dont try the fridge, its dangerous.

if you look at the link to the thread a few posts above there is someone in there from Washington (Cutaway Enterprises). he makes a kickass belt. price isnt too bad either. his username is: cutaway

Will the weight belts and lead weights work that us scuba divers use? You will have to make sure the buckle is fixed better, but I think the good part is the weights can be added easily in 2.5-5 lb increments

Yep. I know a gal that did exactly that.

I've never heard anyone mention it. I'd guess that once you're in freefall, the wind'll be going by faster... so you have to push on it a little harder to do what you want.

What I have heard almost everyone say when they have to wear weights is that lugging the extra weight around is a pain in the ass. Especially if they have bad knees.

For anyone considering weights:
It's not a bad idea to think about what adding 20 lbs to your exit weight does to your wing loading...

i fall VERY fast, the most a jumper has had to wear to jump with me is 8 pounds. I weigh 260, she was 120. 20 pounds of lead I would say is only used in things like the base in the 300 way...

An old friend in a 8 way team had to wear about 30lbs+ (he had to use 2 vests to fit it).

20 lbs is not unusual. My wife wears 14 as her regular weight.

Don't want to argue with your wife's situation, but quite frequently weight is used when other solutions can be.

Faster Jumpsuit (tighter, nylon, or ZP front, no booties)

Training on body position.

Weight on the center of mass (waist/hips) rather than spread across the body.

Weight in the rig.

No arguments here, just discussions! :)
She's small, has a fairly snug nylon and lycra jumpsuit (with smaller grips too as the bigger ones do end up adding drag), she does have booties (it comes down to a balance of options), uses more weight BECAUSE her body poistion was impractical with less, and has her weight in a belt, so pretty focused.

I'm all for use of weights. Many smaller jumpers end up jumping with less because people tell them they dont need them ,and often they end up at the end of their range and arent able to perform well. Karen was bent in 1/2 before going to a belt that made wearing more weights practical.

Same with fat-ass jumpsuits for us fatsos ;)... I may look like a throwback from the 70's, but I can go on the inside or the outside of a 40 way (I wont try the outside of a 300 way just yet ;)).
