Choosing a Rig

Recommended Posts

Usually I buy from the factory that is closest.
For example, when living in Germany, I bought a Mirage container from Skydive Gunter and when living in Elsinore, I bought a Talon from Rigging Innovations (back then R.I. was in Perris/Romoland, California).
This vastly simplifies repairs or modifications as you can drop it off at the factory and pick it up the next day.

Yeah, but it's not like you'll have to get it repaired every week, not even every month. maybe once a year.

I read manuals for almost all the rigs on the market, listen to reviews (mostly complaints), use a little of my "common sense", and decide what looks and feels good on me.
"George just lucky i guess!"

Well, first of all, figure out what you want in a rig. Do you want the best comfort, the coolest styling, the best value, etc? Talk to everyone you know and ask them what they think about their rigs, especially in those specific areas that are most important to you. Talk to riggers and/or instructors that you trust to get their take on it (this also helps because they will be able to offer insight as to what sort of gear will be appropriate for you at this point).

Sometimes demo rigs are available at boogies and other events, but you might also be able to ask some other jumpers if you can test out their rigs. If you do this, though, make sure you clear it with an instructor first to make sure you don't jump gear you're not ready for.

Wander round your DZ and look at peoples rigs. Ask to take a closer look. Handle them. Talk to their owners. Learn about each of the major rig makes. The big thing is to go actaully see the thing your thinking of ordering so seek one out at a DZ and find its owner.

They are all prety much as safe as one another these days (ok so some variation, but you get my point) - it mostly comes down to personal preference over both the styling and the minor differences in safey features each posess. oh yeah, and price;)

If you reseach research research you'll be happy with whatever you decide upon.

Thanks for the replies all. Greatly appreciated. Basically I've researched the manufacturers, read the reviews, and talked with other jumpers.....When I make the decision and finish student training, I'll advise what I choose. Thanks again!
