alexey 6 #1 December 5, 2003 I have a qustion about desing of container, may be for makers mosly... When rig with "classic" (not Infinity, Wings style) desing of the top of reserve containar packed, there are a long, not fixid in any way, not covered reserve risers. In can be easilly pulled away from reserve pack tray. So - the question is - why - some manufacturers cover it by secondary reserve top flap (wings) - some cover they by small additional flap (Atom) - some doesnt do anything, and let it be "as is". If they dont want to make additional covers (wings style) and why? Why not to fix the risers by velcro (which will prevent unwanted movement of a risers)? Thanks a lot for you answers. Sorry for bad English.Lexa
riggerrob 643 #2 December 5, 2003 Hee! Hee! Ask three different designers and you will get four different answers. The primary function of that secondary reserve top flap (ala. Wings and Vector 3) is to provide a place for the pocket that the main riser covers tuck into. The disadvantage of those secondary reserve top flaps is that with certain combinations of tight pack jobs and sloppy packing (i.e. ignoring warning labels) it is possible for a main riser to hang-up under the secondary reserve top flap. Note: Sidewinders have similar pockets, but they are sewn down to the pack tray, simplifying packing, but leaving a large amount of reserve riser exposed. In the long run, most reserve containers are so tight, that it is difficult to pull risers out of them accidentally. Unwanted movement of reserve risers rarely creates problems, so many designers do not bother covering them. There is a similar debate as to why some containers have extra main riser covers solely to hide the steering toggles. Bill Booth explained to me that the main reason he installed extra, internal main riser covers on the Vector 3 was because the external riser covers were so shallow. A quick look at a Sigma Tandem rig will reveal no internal riser covers, because the external riser covers are deep enough to hide the steering toggles. Several other designers copied the Vector 3's extra riser covers without understanding why. For example, early Voodoos had extra riser covers, but recent Voodoos don't. As for your concept of installing extra Velcro to hold risers in place ...The friction of a tight container is usually enough to prevent risers from pulling out. Secondly, hook Velcro has an annoying habit of destroying any other fabric it gets near. Thirdly, skydivers are notoriously lazy about replacing pile Velcro when it wears out. So, you see, any additional component may solve one problem, but create others. Rig designers are always trying to stay one step ahead of the idiots. Hee! Hee!
